Take a look at this Freaking number & Cry

Yes look at it. Here in Ohio School are cutting back. Jobs are scarce. Cities are crying they are broke and the roads are rougher than before they were paved. Now we pay our taxes yet they say it still ain't getting the job done. They want more and more and more.....
So I take a look at the news today and this little number pops up and this folks is "Ohio only". You guys have you own little number, some of you are lower and some of you are higher.... Anyway now that I have my Jaw jacked back into place....And now warn you to brace yours...... This is the tax paid on Gasoline in 2006.....And that is just OHIO.....

    Are you guys taxes on a percentage or is it a cents-per-gallon tax?

    I think I'm going to ask the county commission here (and my state reps) to pass a law where the breakdown of price and taxes must be displayed on pumps - eg.

    Gas price - $2
    This tax @ 3c/gal - .03
    that tax @ 23% - .46
    other tax @ 1c/gal - .01

    and so on... I think here in Fl. we are mostly "cents per gallon" so with rising gas costs we aren't getting any more into the state/county budgets...

    Sometimes I suspect our tax money isn't being used as efficiently as possible. I don't think the feds are getting best return for our dollar either.

    Here in KY a breakdown is posted on the pumps. We can stand there and watch our wallets drain and contemplate where most of our money goes! This is an ongoing debate that my father and I have. He is pushing 70, democrat to the core. I keep telling him that we don't need any NEW taxes, just a redistribution and accountability on what the govt already takes in. My contention is that the govt takes in more than enough already if they would just spend it wisely. He just shakes his head.

    Would someone please explain to me the difference between a "cents-per-gallon" and a "percentage" tax ??

    I played with this for a couple of minutes, and they appear to get the same result.

    HELP !!

    If gas tax is "one cent per gallon" and gas is $1.00 a gallon, the tax is one cent per gallon.
    Same holds true at "one percent" if the gas is at $1.00, tax is one cent.

    If the tax is one "percent" per gallon and gas is $3.00 a gallon, the tax is three cents.
    The "one cent per gallon" stays at one cent tax, no matter what price the gallon is.
    "Percent tax" will go up and down with the price of gas., cents per gallon does not.

    BIG difference when your talking millions of dollars.
