New thought for me...
Thinking about the chaos in Africa since the colonials left, leaving the governance of the assorted countries to the indigenous people.
As those imported people gain power here, it appears we are headed the same direction.
Also, one might consider the sad state of the Union of South Africa since the end of aparthied.
Am I crazy, or does anyone else see a cause and effect relationship, here ???

There is no question that some societies are more capable of governing themselves than others. Look to south America for proof.
Time does not appear to help them sort their way out of their everyday problems.
Governments are corrupt and people remain ignorant! Its been that way forever. America is trying to change that in Mexico by moving all our manufacturing facitities across the border to bring up their standard of living. But the grassroots ground up education level in Mexico is not where it needs to be and it holds the people down.
The middle east is another interesting place to look. Lots of oil revenue per person but most of the folks choose to live with their camels and sheep! Women to them are lower than their camels or sheep.
Other peoples tend to be very industrious and work like dogs to better themselves. Germans are a case in point. They can usually find a solution to any problem.
The group that you are referring to in general appears to want the same things most folks want, at least in this country, but many don't have the drive to get there the hard way.0 -

Doug,
Chaos when the governing people leave is caused by one thing: Suddenly giving power to people who have NO IDEA what to do.
Think of it it this way: If you were standing in an operating room, watching brain surgery, and the surgeon goes "Here, finish up for me" just how well would YOU do? It's the same thing. The people who are suddenly "in charge" are completely clueless.

Just because some smarty pants draws lines on a map and declares the area to be a nation does not mean the primitive tribal societies living within those lines are gonna like each other.
Stick nomadic primitive societies with bad tempers together and add oil, diamonds, gold and AK-47's and you get a bunch of primitive people out killing each other for fun and giggles.
Now you understand Africa.0 -
The cause and effect of chaos in Africa and over here is hardly the same.
For one thing, the problem here is rampant welfare while over in Africa it's an extreme lack of opportunity coupled with corruption.
If you are pointing to a racial cause for the inferiority and substandard conditions they find themselves in, might I point out that various portions of Eastern Europe and the Balkans are just as bad. Yes, women are getting raped there, too!
A simple one-size-fits-all conclusion to what is a very complex set of problems usually doesn't.
If anything, the reason why we are "headed in the same direction" is because our political leaders are waging war on the middle class. Tax cuts for the rich without a corresponding cut in tax spending places a greater burden on the us working folks. And since we are not earning any more for our labor, we are in effect earning less.
And as the number of poor increase due to this lopsided economic model, more spending is "required" to prop up social welfare... which only serves to keep the poor in the their place.
Thus the rich get richer, the poor stay poor, and the middle class catches it from both ends. The middle class will shrink and eventually disappear altogether and all due to the machinations of the so-called "elite" who want to establish themselves as the New Nobility.
And you can't have a nobility without a peasant class... which is what they have planned for us.0 -
Well - that cleared up my head.

Jeez, that couldn't be it Merc, that leaves no room for the "we are inherently better than them" so popular among the Klan affiliated around here.0 -
Very good analogy. How would that explain events here, though ??
