Car-chase questions for LEOs
I was watching one of these "Cops"-type shows and the overvoice (Sheriff John Bunnell, of course) said something to the effect, "With the county line only miles away, deputies have to do something fast." Is it true that if the bad guy gets across the county (or city, or state) line first, the chase stops unless someone from the new jurisdiction picks it up? I can understand not pursuing into Mexico, but from Sky Blue to Brown Butt County? Can you clarify? Thanks.

The answer is NO! He may have had radio communications in mind bringing in another agency when he made that remark.
HOT PURSUIT means that you can pursue across the country as long as you don't lose sight of the suspect for an un-reasonable amount of time. (Say he is far enough ahead that he goes around a corner and you lose sight of him for a very short time.)0 -
The police need faster cars. New Corvettes, with 500+ hp engines and chain guns mounted on the hood! That would bring these chases to a halt a bit quicker.[;)] 0 -

The chase will not stop. The lead chase vehicle may change, but the chase will continue.

Good to see ya Charlie, here in Va. the Officer can continue to pursue the vehicle into the County/City etc as long as the can maintain site of the vehicle.
Edited to add: Each Agency also has their own (SOPs) Standard of procedure on chase procedure's.0 -
Unless they make it across an international border it makes no difference. What you were hearing was just typical John Bunnel BS dramatics.
As much as he acts as if his first name is "Sheriff", he was just an appointee who served as interim Sheriff of Multnomah Co. Oregon for about 6 months due to the previous Sheriff retiring early. He was defeated in the first election he entered.
According to his former fellow deputies he was a Lieutenant when Cops filmed there and he got stars in his eyes. After getting defeated in the election he got his teeth capped, a $500 haircut and went Hollywood. They see him as a bad joke.0 -

We chase them until they give up, crash, or we cause them to stop, ie pit them or spike the tires etc, or they make it into Mexico, in which case the Federalies will take care of them.
That county line crap is just that.0 -
I think "hot pursuit" doctrine also applies to State lines??

Sorry, I wasn't clear(again) - that is what I meant - State lines are not a barrier to hot pursuit.

I don't know if things have changed since they made it a felony in Michigan to flee and elude, but when I worked the border county of Monroe, we had to terminate the pursuit at the state line on misdemeanors. I don't recall what the dept's policy was on felonies.
People sometimes tried to get across the state line into Ohio if troopers were trying to stop them for traffic violations.
They would then slow down once they got across the border. Smart troopers would turn off their lights and pull alongside and wave at them (while in Ohio) while they laughed.
The troopers did this so they could identify the driver. Then troopers would arrest or ticket the guy the following day in Michigan because it was still a crime or civil infraction that was committed in their presence, they could still arrest or ticket them days later.
And then they got no breaks on their tickets. Many of these people had jobs in Michigan and were in and out of state on a daily basis. The trooper just had to catch them in Michigan to write the ticket.0 -

Each jurisdiction has a policy on pursuits. It is only a policy thing, and has no real reflection on what the actual laws are. The law says that you may continue a "hot pursuit" all the way to international borders. Locally, they may limit that, depending on the offense. 0 -

Yep, I did the same research and found out the same results! Funny, I always liked him, and still do, he is doing great with his new successful TV career. Just a career cop from Portland, OR that made it big!0 -
