Many makers make the 1911, please tell me which?
Besides the Colt,
How many(and which ones) make a 1911? Remember though....I ONLY buy .40 cals.(not .45), for my reloading simplicity.
I know that there are quite a number of 40 cal. 1911 makers.
Some are high priced, some are lower....I'd like to chose amongsth them, please?

There is nothing any easier to reload than the 45 acp. More bullets available, brass and supplies. Plus the round is not a high pressure round and the guns last a heck of a lot longer. Just wanted to toss that on the table.
I don't have a clue as to which 1911's are chambered for 40 cal. I knew they did the 9mm but was not aware they were doing 40 cal now. Makes sense, as the round gets more popular.0 -

(I'm sure that .45 reloading would be just as "easy", but I'm now already setup 92% for .40 cal. , and want to keep things simple now, thanks).0 -
you will hear many debates on this issue, you will have to do allot of reading to educate yourself and make decision, you need to figure out what all your current and future needs will be, don't rule out competing in the future, how much bang for your buck you want to spend, if i where to choose a .40 1911 there is only one choice in my opinion STI eagle, while it is a bit pricey, it covers many bases, in ipsc it can go major or minor, i.d.p.a. it can be shot in esp,ssp, it can be a single stack, and by changing the grip it can be a double stack, very reliable, and a lifetime warranty

Colt is out of my price range.
eboydell, I'm not a 1911aholoc or have that Colt "sacred" .45 feeling about them some do. It would be one more neat toy in my toybox. I don't want to reload .45 for only one gun...and 40 cal. for all 7 other pistols, thank you.
But you are right about one thing, instead of buying a BAR in .30 cal.(30-06), or even .22....I think I'll get one that shoots BBs0 -
Just looked at your posting history.
You seem to be trying hard to learn.
.40 is one of my daily carry arms, but you really ought to consider expanding your horizons. I find that different firearms in varying calibers, add a lot of fun to the hobby.

OK Doug, I may consider the buying extra dyes and other gear to reload .45 also. Although I still lean towards the simplicity side of things and .40 is a good all around caliber that I prefer.
Still, aren't there any companies besides Colt, Taurus and Sringfield that make 1911s?
(I'll trying to build a little collection of one pistol of all difference manufacturers, and already have Springfield and Taurur in it)

how bout a .22 kimber 1911, you wont have to reload, you will get a much diffferent use and fun. .40 and 45 are much more similar
you want a cheaper one? then get the infamous rock island and a conversion kit

..Why is it that when the name Colt is mentioned...right after you hear "out of my price range"...seem to hear that a lot. IF I am going to drop $700 (well maybe $800, a LOT at $1,000![8D]) bucks on a handgun, I feel really GOOD that if taken care of my family can actually MAKE money on it; instead of loosing or "maybe" breaking even when I'm room temp, if they choose to do so.
...buy a plastic Glock, and NOT shoot it, and see if you can break even on it...[:0][^]
...I like Colts and a lot of other brands as well, but Colt 1911's is where it all started as far as semi auto hand guns; why, buy a clone??

One of the fun things you can do with the Glock or Sig 40 cals is buy the extra barrel in 357sig and have two cal for the price of the extra barrel.
The mags are the same since both have a 40 cal base. The 357sig is simply necked down to run the 9mm bullet. And run it does, its hot as heck and will reach out and touch someone at long distance.
I bought the Glock model 32 in 357sig then bought a 40 cal glock barrel and its a drop in deal. No work to switch them out and no other parts to worry about.
The Glock is not that expensive and makes a fine carry gun in 40 or 357sig. If you buy your extra barrel from Lone Wolf in the stainless match barrel you can shoot reloads in it and its only $100.0 -
Yes, Glocks are reasonably priced, reliable and accurate. I have a 40 cal. model 23 and love shooting it.
I explained this somewhere before, but don't remember where. So far, all my pistols are moderate priced quality guns, because in my area of Texas the police have a standard policy of collecting ALL the firearms when a "crime" has been committed(even if inside your own house and you are being attacked, and are justified in using deadly force...and absolved of any wrong doing)...they just destroy them all without caring whose was mine, or the bad guy's. You never get your gun back, it is always destroyed. Period.
THAT's why I try to by reasonably price quality pistols.
I bought ALL my pistols New for under $675.(many where on "specials" at the time)
They range from full sized to compacts and subcompacts...and made by:
Springfield
Glock
Sig Sauer
Taurus
Beretta
Steyr
(and CZ in about 2 days also)

Colt, I've been doing some looking around and found some, but I only buy new pistols from gunsmiths, shops or large chain stores. I may
not get a 1911, as you see, I don't really "need one" with all those others. And try to collect ones of different makers than the ones I already own. So having Taurus and Springfield already(who make 40 caliber 1911s)and cost restraints, preference for 40 cal. and wanting each to be never owned by anyone else previously....I may just need to pass on a 1911.
My only reason is so many people like theirs so much, that all. I use All mine nearly every weekend, and would use it too, if anyone could help me find one under $700 max.(most of mine have actually cost only in $300 to $400 ranges(except for the Sig)before.0 -
I think Para-Ordinance makes a 1911 .40 caliber, double stack too.[^] 0 -
You are going to pay alot more all around for a 1911 in 40sw. Mags are more expensive.
Both Kimber and Para Ordnance make a 40sw 1911. I believe the Kimber uses a single stack mag while the Para is double stack.
Of the guns listed my choich would be either the Para Ordnance P16 Limited or STI. I know guys that own both of those. Both shoot competively and swear by them.0 -
Browning made(makes??) a Hi-Power in .40 S&W. Same operating system as a 1911, except no grip safety.
I had one and I liked it. SonDave has it now.
