I've been reading the forum for a few years, but finally decided to join and post.
Is it too much for a new guy to ask a favor. I'm thinking of purchasing one of two 1956 chevys for a restoration project. The cars have been sitting since 1974. Carfax does not go back far enough.
If I e-mailed the Vin numbers, would it be possible to check on them? Make sure they are not stolen or something?

You might want to check "vehicle abandonment" laws in whatever state you are in.
Generally, the statute of limitations on reporting a stolen vehicle is up in five years, but this varies from state to state.0 -
Have your friend at the wrecking yard do it.
Mine does it for the state imposed cost on him of $5.

If your state will issue you a "lost title," there is no problem and no need to run the VIN. The trouble with running the VIN through NCIC, is that we are supposed to have the object (or person) in hand or at least in view before requesting a check. If the item or person comes back wanted, the agency that entered it will be wanting to know where their person or item is. 0 -

Our town has no Police department. I tried calling the PD in the city next to us, and they seemed like they didn't want to be bothered with it. I guess I can understand that, they're busy trying to keep the bad guys off the streets, but I hat to spend a bunch of cash on something that if I tried to get registered after spending much more cash and time on, just to find out it was stolen 30 years ago and parked or something.
State police which patrol our town wanted me to bring the car down there... Can't happen
I tried the DMV, but they wont tell me anything because I am not the owner of the car.
I guess I'll forget about it, I dont want to jump through a whole bunch of hoops

yes it is, theres been reports of things getting changed on there. i listen to some guy on the radio here in the upstate sometimes, not sure where the show is out of,but its an am station. But anywho he has callers call in and ask him questions on fixing a problem with there vehicle, and he just downs carfax all the time.
Then you got Clark Howard, a finacial type show host who can tell you pretty much anything on anything dealing with finacials. He hates them also.0 -

Welcome! Good question! Some great minds here! Oh, and just to add... go to a license plate place and ask for a lost title search. It's about 30 dollars or so to have one done. The thing is, in some places, you have to get the signature of the last person who owned it on the paperwork... had to go through this with a moped... not the same as a car, but close enough...0 -
go to your local dept of motor vehicle....to run through lein and it comes up hot...alot of question's will need to be answered by the leo that runs the check and could cost him his employment...state dmv should provide same info if available and allow you to apply for a new title if you can provide legal ownership 0 -
I certainly dont want to put anyone's job in jepordy over this.... I'll stop in the local DMV office, maybe I can get further than I could over the phone.... 0 -
