any 9mm with similar fps, recoil lower than .40 ?

In general,(in identical pistols)a 9mm round with similar muzzle fps velocity, has less recoil than a .40 cal., right(or not)?

I'm confused again.
A very knowledgable member here finds the opposite to be true, saying 9MM round, with a similar muzzel velocity kick harder than .40 cal round.

Everone else find them that way?

    think of it in pipe diameter, take a water hose with 1/2" diameter, then neck that down to a smaller hose like a old fire hose nozzle to 1/8", same amount of pressure being pumped through the hose, the original hose will have no "recoil", but necked down you will feel it, might not be the best way to explain it, but you get the picture i hope

    Please note that I said it "felt" like that to me.

    One of the problems with discussing recoil is that different people react differently, physically.

    I find the recoil impulse of the .45ACP in a 1911 to be easier than the .40, which is easier than the 9.

    I think part of that may be the length of time the impulse is spread over, and also the sort of sound that is made.

    If you haven't done it, try going to a range and asking 1 of the 9MM shooters to try his weapon. Shoot one of your .40s also, and compare them for yourself.

    I have seen a few articles comparing recoil in rifles by what is called "free recoil". I have never seen it done with pistols.

    It also has to do with barrel length - both sound and actual recoil.

    Free recoil energy is what you get when you "crunch the numbers" (bullet weight, bullet velocity, powder weight, powder velocity, gun weight, gun velocity). It assumes that the gun is free to move as far/fast as it wants to.

    Felt recoil is the subjective one, and there the size of the grip shape of the grip, muzzle flip, muzzle flash, muzzle blast all play their roles in your perception of the recoil (assuming the same cartridge and gun weight)

    Thanks guys, especially Doug again.
    I think I may get a .22LR pistol to introduce them "gently".
    I have no idea how each individual kid of mine with perceive recoil.
    But a lower priced pistol of that caliber would no doubt feel as if it had less.

    Sorry, In a similar pistol (ie glock 17 and 22), the 40 will kick more (in porportion to the rise in kinetic energy of the projectile) than the 9mm.
    Yes a tuned STI .40 will kick less than a kel tec 9mm shooting +ps, but lets not be a$$^&**(s
    40 and 45 while similar in energy from std loads, are a better reflection of the difference b/w recoil impulses
