Anyone Ever See a Real,............

Civil War era Whitworth rifle?
Read an article recently about them being used by the CSA for sniper rifles during the war.
Also evidently resulted in the death of General John Sedgwick at Spotsylvania. Shot was taken from somewhere around the range of 1000 yards!

    I view with great skepticism the tales of extreme range accuracy during that period of time.

    No, I've never seen one.

    I saw some show on tv where a gun shot a 1000 yard target with a civil war rifle. Don't know many shots it too him though. But it is possible with the right gun.

    Sgt. Grace (American Civil War) - sniped Major General John Sedgwick at the then incredible distance of 730 m (800 yd) during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, with a British Whitworth target rifle causing administrative delays in the Union's attack, leading to Confederate victory. Sedgwick ignored advice to take cover, his last words according to urban legend being, "They couldn't hit an elephant at this dist-" upon which he was shot. In reality, he was shot a few minutes later.

    Looks like I was off by a couple hundred yards!
