to me it would have nothing to do with his sexuality. i would not let a 13yr old go out with a group of hetero/homo/bi whatever group of adults that i have no knowledge of for a 4 day boating trip.

Are these guys a functional married couple ??

This seems a little over the edge to me.

This difference of opinion may indicate other, underlying problems.

I hope this gets taken care of with no harm of any kind to the Son. It has the potential to hurt him in several different ways.

The best interests of the Boy should be the over-riding consideration.

    I think.

the uncle is FLAWED. he NOT a fine example. he is a defective unit in need of quick change or he will pervert others around him.
    TOLERENCE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.
the uncle should be SHAMED back into whatever hole he crawled out of.
    reject his company.
    flee from sin.
    protect the young.

He should have said that "this is not my opinion, this my unalterable decision that he will not go."

"Take it or leave it, go get the divorce papers, but he ain't going.
And the court papers are going to say the same thing."

Really this guy has got to get a set.

Setting aside the issue of whether being gay is in itself a bad example(which is the decision of the parents) i would think of it the same way as i would consider sending a young daughter on a trip with a male uncle. Unless i knew him very well(which i'd have to assume his sister does), and trusted him 110% i personally woundn't feel comfortable with it.

i know many gays, some i trust enough that i would go on a camping trip with, and have no problem with it, but not my son, even if i knew they where monogamous, and not a pedophile, in this case she may be full right about her brother, but his mate is a entire different subject, and assuming he is trustworthy as far as touching the child goes, is he or them together trustworthy not to make a impression on the boy, that age and this day and age kids are undecided about their sexuality, and do not need the confusion

Personally, regardles of how I stand on this issue, I am losing respect by the second for anyone who has to solicit others for their opinions as far as how they parent their children.

+1. And I'm sorry but I wouldn't let my child hang out with a group of gay's at such a young age. And her brother may be a nice person, but he is not a perfect role model for a child.

sounds to me like the only one in that family that has a set of balls is the wife,I would not let my 13yr old daughter go off boating with a group of straight men and I would not let my 13yr old son go off with a bunch of gay men,its called being a parent, you dont always do whats popular you do whats right

So, they get a divorce. And guess what? She's going to let the kid go camping with the uncle. The guy is going to have to run to court to try to get an order to stop it. And unless he's got some HUGE reason, he's going to lose and the Courts will remember this episode.

What if it was his grandfather?

Let me see if I have these details right:

    1. Offer is made to put Son in a potentially dangerous situation (assume Uncle loves nephew and would never harm him, first you have to define "harm;" there are numerous other threats to the child on the trip besides Uncle - that's a fact, call me a gay-basher if you want, it's not about gay being right or wrong, it's about more gays than straights are pedophiles).

    2. Dad, understanding there will be repercussions, decides it best to ask opinions from unknown entities over the internet before he can even discuss it with Mom.

    3. Overwhelming consensus of those opinioins is basically "protect your child, that's what fathers do." (good job unknown internet entities)

    4. Dad considers the opinions and decides it's now safe to approch Mom.

    5. Mom takes brother's side over Dad.

    6. Mom thinks gay brother is "a perfect role model."

    7. Mom decides to go silent for 2 days until she makes up her mind what to say. (she may be on the internet getting opinions from Rosie O's discussion board right now)

    8. Dad now is sitting quitely waiting for her well-thought-out decision to be revealed.

    Good grief...

The child should probably be removed from such a dysfunctional environment before he's messed up any more than he already must be.

Thats one of the things I've been wondering about. Is it normal for this 'uncle' to take the kid(s) places?? Given the reluctance around this from 'Dad' I'm kinda thinking maybe not...[:0]

    Wow.

    Tough standard.

I hope you never meet people who hold you to this same ideal.

It is a tough standard, and I hold it when it comes to my kids, it is my job to protect them and if that means that I am not a tolerant person than so be it.

I was referring (admittedly without context)to the overall theme:

    "Tolerance will not be tolerated"

I, too, am very careful about my young daughter, but the words "Tolerance is not acceptable" seems so tiny-minded that it amused me.

I don't think that all gays are predators and I know that all predators aren't gay. So I try to protect my family from known or assumed threats, instead of indoctrinating my child that if somebody is different from us, they're bad.

Blame my parents. They were pretty tolerant folks.

Perhaps the father should get to know the uncle and his mate a little better so that when this type of offer comes up again he can know what he is talking about instead of reacting to fear and loathing over something as superfluous as the sexual preferences of consenting adults. And there-in lies the answer to his wife that will save his marriage and fulfill his duty to protect his child.
"I am sorry dear, but I don't know him well enough to send Junior off for an extended trip under his supervision. Maybe I should get to know him a little better so I can make a decision on a trip at some future time."

I saw the previous thread but did not respond as the majority of replys mirrored what I would say. But I now have 2 comments.
1st: What if the boy is gay and the dad just doesn't know it? If I were a straight teen asked to go on an extended boat trip w/a bunch of queers, I"D be EXTREMELY nervous and reluctant to go. If the kid knows Unc is queer and WANTS to go, that would be a red flag to me.
Next: In the event the kid is straight and the father is "out voted" by the mothers family, I'd make it EXTREMELY clear that if I even THOUGHT the gay Unc or any of his friends touched my son in any unappropriate way, the last thing he'd see on earth would be me shoving the barrel of a pistol in his mouth.
