"old school"
Lately this term has become increasingly common in everyday parlance, but I've noticed that it is used almost exclusively for things other than what it really means.
All the time, I hear about someone's "old school tribal ghost flame" paintjob, or their "old school Softail" or how "old school" so-and-so is because of whatever reasaon.
For all I know, that person is "old school" because they like half-soy extra hot mochachinos and prefer jelly to syrup when "tossing salad". That is how far out of touch the "old schoolers" are with what really is "old school".
I have been described by some as old school, and I feel that I fit the definition, at least my interpretation of it. I'm a do-for-yourself kind of person, self-reliant and all. I learned the old ways from old practitioners thereof, got the old redneck tricks from real old rednecks, taught myself anything that I needed to know but couldn't find a willing teacher. That, to me, is old school. It's not your ride, your clothes, or anything else. It's you and how you became you, how you acquired your skills and interests.
Old school these days is merely an aesthetic, a veneer. Skin deep and flakes off like cheap chrome. Old school is not a "tribal ghost flame" Softail, unless you built it yourself.
It's not just bikes, too. That is just my frame of reference for the subject. "Old school" is the new retro chic BS commodity and everyone wants it or wants to be it, without realizing that either you are or you aren't.
Sorry, rant concluded. Just kind of a sore subject to me. I'm fully immersed in fake "old school" part of the day and need to vent.

Well said. There ain't been no good rock and roll since the '70's, no good country music since the '80's and I watch the old TV shows not because I like them, but because there's nothing better on. NASCAR hasn't been worth watching since they went to radial tires. Some things are better, though. I like my cell phone, cordless power tools, and, of course, the internet. 0 -

Me, I tell my kid to do something and he isn't doing it in .0003 seconds, I shoot him in the face with my 10 gauge. One time I caught one of the girls sneaking a cookie between meals, and I cut her hand off with a band saw! I made one boy drink a pint of gas because I caught him drinking out of the spigot on a hot summer day. Now that's how you raise good, respectful kids!0 -

I often introduce myself as "One of the last of the baby boom generation"
Both of my parents were born during the Great Depression. I was the oldest grandchild on my mother's side of the family and I was raised in close contact with aunts and uncles on both sides - hence the values I absorbed are "old school"
My g/f, although only a few months younger than me was raised as an "army brat"
She lived all over the U.S. and in a couple places overseas - she is definitely Gen-X
Ya gotta consider - in 20, 30, 50 years or so, now will be the "good old days" for the middle age folks of the day.0 -

what gets me is, ok, i'm 33 and not that old, but i have those "back in the day..." stories from my youth. but i heard a 19 year old say that "back in the day..." i just wanted to smack em and say "dude, you just graduated high school, you're not old enought o have a 'back in the day' thing yet. you've been living with mommy and daddy all your life. when you move out and have some life experience then you can have a 'back in the day'. til then, quit your whining and gimme my fries." but i didn't. i didn't wanna make him cry. 0 -

I guess the "old days" have way different meanings to everyone. When I think of the old days, I think of the days in 1916 when my Father stoked a B&O steam engine with coal, by hand.
When I think of "back in the day", I think of my Brother getting depth charged in a diesel sub during the Korean War.
"back in the day" is a phrase that I have trouble getting my hands around - it is pretty vague, and can mean wildly different things to different people.
In terms of "old school", I'm thinking of the late '50s - Patriotism, hard physical work, High School education for the lucky ones, the Draft, and pretty bad cars - even though I love 'em.
So I try to put those phrases in the context of who is saying them.
That 18 year old burger flipper does have a "back in the day" and where he is NOW, will be "back in the day" for his kids, when he's 30.
It is all subjective, my friend.
