I'm an amateur reverse engineer. That is to say, I take things and look at them real good, then make my own. Saves money, gives a sense of satisfaction, and even occasionally, an opportunity to improve upon a product or idea.
My first reverse engineering project was a pirogue, back about 30 years ago. I looked at a pirogue (city slickers and yankees might call it a cajun canoe) floating in a bayou, made a few off the cuff measurements, then built my own, only better of course. I did that by adding a large model airplane engine with 18 inch prop to it. Made it into an air pirogue, but that's better'n paddling. And that's the point, right?
So I reverse engineered and fabricated the sub-assemblies for a Hannigan sidecar for my motorcycle. I reverse engineered and fabricated the tip over bars for the bike. I reverse engineered and fabricated the GPS holder on my bike, all of these as just examples. If it's wood or metal, and short of requiring a lathe and/or milling machine, I'll tackle it if I can find some possible use for it.
And the RAY-O-VAC-TAC-ticle light was wonderful! It took only one shopping trip for parts, and a half-hour of pleasant fiddling around in my shop, and I've got the brightest bloomin' flashlight I've ever seen, short of those huge one million candlepower blow torches. Love it!
I recently reverse engineered a very useful shooting bench from photos seen here (thank you to the writer who gave the Ruger forum link) and in the Cheaper Than Dirt catalog. I love it!
Then there was the device by which I put a Harris bipod on my T/C Encore with 15 inch .22LR barrel. Actually I saw a photo of such a pistol with bipod in another link from the forum here, and just the idea was enough to trip the wire. So, not wanting to drill and tap a hole in the bottom of my barrel, I instead used a 1.5 inch piece of 12 ga. shotgun barrel, which, with a little inside sanding fit over the T/C barrel like a charm. I drilled and tapped a hole in the shotgun barrel piece, sufficient to take a swivel stud I made from a bolt (simple, just grind and sand the bolt-head round, and put a hole through it a proper size to take the sling swivel connector), which I screwed in then locked in real good and tight with Loc-Tite. Another hole or two to enable me to attach it to the T/C barrel by using the front sight holes, and it was ready to go. I love it!
So, now comes my next reverse engineering project. On pages 510-511, of the FALL MASTER CABELA'S catalog, are a number of rifle rests. I will make one. Shucks, it's just a few pieces of square metal tubing, some bolts and so forth, a little bit of welding, and some painting, and I'll be all set to put my new shooting bench to proper use.
Thing is, I've never used such a device. So, here's my question. What innovation do you feel I need to add to the rifle rest, to get the most out of it? Motion on some other axis? Faster Acme screws for adjustment? Extra weight on the bottom? Rifle stock butt rest, ie, as in SH-22-4946, or stock clamp as on SH-22-7745?
Sometimes it's just a matter of being willing to think outside the box. And I do appreciate your help!
