MOSCOW, June 4 (UPI) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin told a British newspaper U.S. plans to put a missile defense system in eastern Europe could trigger a nuclear war.

"There are no such missiles -- Iran does not have missiles with the range," Putin told the Times. The United States insists the defense system is "for the protection from something that does not exist. Is it not sort of funny?"

    I think Putin brings up a valid point, we can't outright say that we want to defend against Russia - that may trigger even more instability, but we say we want to defend ourselves against Iran, to which Russia sells nuclear machinery and material. We want Russia to stop, but we don't want to demand it. So we take care of it using some strategic diplomacy, make a plan that unites many of the strongest countries in the world. Hopefully Russia will get the point and stop dealing with a terrorist supporting country and we don't have to build a multi-billion dollar missile defense program. But if the don't - we smite them and build the best damn program the world has ever seen and put them at an extreme strategic disadvantage.

    Exactly! Russia also knows the flip side of the coin Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea.

    Putin is playing to his base. Most world leaders do it. When you have a crappy country and you are a bad leader blame everything on other countries. He is in trouble with voters there and he wont last long. He will be gone soon and I am glad because its very important to have a stable and peaceful relationship between America and Russia.

    Anyway me as a European DONT enjoy the idea of radioactive missile debris falling down over my country or any other country near mine.Coz the winds WILL within a short time blow radioactive pollution our way.

    PUT thoose missile defencesystems on Island and Greenland instead ! Coz the atlantic ocean is'nt so densely populated , if i put it like that.
    Hmm or the russians might put up their own toys on Cuba and last time the russians played around there WW 3 almost started [:(]

    Right Talented. The Russian and European news media is sooo unfiltered. Yeah sure, you betcha. Can I sell you what ever interest I might have in a bridge.
    We were never even close to WW3. It was more of a hoax. China wants back the territory the Soviets took from them. China has always had its army on the border with Russia, just waiting for WW3 so China could take it back. So the Soviets, now Russia, had and still has most of her army on their side of the border. The Soviet army that was in the satalite countries was only just enough so maintain control.
    It is a good bridge. It might be possible that maybe you might be able to put a toll on it. Lots of cars drive across it every day.

    I don't know what to think.
    The Russians think it is an aggressive posture on the part of the US,
    but seriously 10 interceptor missiles with a test track record of 3/5 hits would do little to stop a Russian nuclear strike if we came to blows with them (6 missiles down out of what? a thousand?), so why are they concerned?

    Talented, There is no place to get unfiltered news about anything. I have come to the conclusion that the only purpose the news has is to show what stupid people are believing.
    Years ago a news commetator, can't remember who, said the purpose of the news media was to shape and mold public opinion. That was probably the only news reporting that is reliable.
    When the news slants from the right, public opinion bends right. As time goes by the news media slowly starts to slant to the left and so does public opinion. Often this takes place over a period of 5 to 10 years and most people never notice, or even remember what they previously thought about the issue.
