ERIE, Pa. - An Erie cancer researcher has found a way to burn salt water, a novel invention that is being touted by one chemist as the "most remarkable" water science discovery in a century.
John Kanzius happened upon the discovery accidentally when he tried to desalinate seawater with a radio-frequency generator he developed to treat cancer. He discovered that as long as the salt water was exposed to the radio frequencies, it would burn.
The discovery has scientists excited by the prospect of using salt water, the most abundant resource on earth, as a fuel.
Rustum Roy, a Penn State University chemist, has held demonstrations at his State College lab to confirm his own observations.
The radio frequencies act to weaken the bonds between the elements that make up salt water, releasing the hydrogen, Roy said. Once ignited, the hydrogen will burn as long as it is exposed to the frequencies, he said.
The discovery is "the most remarkable in water science in 100 years," Roy said.
"This is the most abundant element in the world. It is everywhere," Roy said. "Seeing it burn gives me the chills."
Roy will meet this week with officials from the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense to try to obtain research funding.
The scientists want to find out whether the energy output from the burning hydrogen - which reached a heat of more than 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit - would be enough to power a car or other heavy machinery.
"We will get our ideas together and check this out and see where it leads," Roy said. "The potential is huge."

If it could rid our dependancy on oil, that would be teh best benefit. The first thing you would have to do is eliminate the top brass of all the energy producers.
One excellent side-benefit of this that by itself would make the whole exercise worthwhile is that it would lead to civil war in all the middle eastern and latin american countries. That would take care of the biggest problem facing the civilized nations!0 -

There are NO unlimited resources on a closed ecosystem like a planet, except solar energy, and even that has limits, though not practical limits.0 -
Water is, techincally speaking, limited, but it is constantly recycled. There is exactly the same amount of water on the earth today as there was 100 years ago, or a million years ago. 0 -

Sorry folks, the "fuel" is not salt water, it is the fuel used by the power plant to generate the power for the rf generator. This is not only impractical, but would be horribly inefficient[:(]

Car battery is used to zap salt water with radio waves.....hydrogen/oxygen gas created.....car battery cranks engine over....engine fires and runs.
Generator/alternator recharges battery.
Just keep adding salt water and drive.0 -
Obi, it does not work that way. A "car battery" with sufficient amps to generate the rf required would weigh as much as the car. Every time you transfer energy some is lost (to entropy, mechanical loss (friction, etc.) heat, and on and on). Transferring energy from a battery to an rf generator, then transferring it to the salt water, then transferring it into a flame is horribly inefficient and simply will not produce more energy then it consumes. You would have to recharge the battery from an outside source (i.e. fossil fueled power plant) very often.

The three laws of thermodynamics:
You can't get something for nothing
You can't break even
You will always lose
First Law: Energy cannot be created, it must already exist and once found it can then be harnessed and put to use, though often in a different form than the original. The Second Law of Thermodynamics: If you use energy or convert energy from one form to another, you will lose some of it because no mechanical device can ever be 100% efficient. If you burn natural gas, coal or oil to make steam to drive a generator in order to make electricity, you'll end up with less heat than you originally got from the gas, coal or oil. Third law: Energy transfer is a losing proposition and it is vitually impossible to recover the energy you lost in converting energy from one form to another.
Free hydrogen is a viable motory fuel, in fact it is an excellent motor fuel, but there are no hydrogen deposits in the earth like deposits of oil or coal; hydrogen has to be created and this takes energy, currently too much energy to make sea water practical, at least for now.0 -
