can you identify this old hat?

found in a trunk that belonged to my fiances grandfather. it was with about 20 complete newspapers from 1945, most with v-e day headlines. awesome find, we are still reading though them. any info on the hat is appreciated.

  Sure looks like around 1840 to 1880, not American, infantry.
  
  Maybe try the curator of a museum - email the photo to him.
