    About 9:10 p.m., police responded to a call that men were lying on the ground with rifles at the park. When police arrived they found the men dressed in camouflage and carrying the Airsoft guns. Airsoft guns are sold with orange tips and shoot plastic pellets.


    The men said they were waiting to meet a group from another city to play a war game.


    Police confiscated five fake weapons. All had small orange tips on the barrel except for the submachine gun, which had black tape over the tip and a magazine with fake bullets.


    The men were cited for disorderly conduct and released.





    What grounds is it to confiscate the guns?

    I wonder what they did to get the "Disorderly" charge?


    I will admit that the Airsoft guns do look very real and that I can see how someone could have mistaken them for the real ones. Depending on the area of the park they were in it could have been very scary for anyone that saw them. But it is a public park and they should have as much right to "Play" in it as anyone else.

    Common FREAKING SENSE. Something that ALL police are not allowed to use now a days. This is not a criminal case, this is a case of laws that need to be repealed, and the folks that passed them need to be jailed and or executed. This is an assault on every individual freedom that all Americans hold dear. The only problem? Most don't know it yet!!! You will....Oh YOU FREAKING WILL!!!

    I find it funny how a lot of folks on this board will try to justify the actions of the police in a case like this. Someone got scared. Being scared is a feeling, not a state of mind, or a religion, or a way of life. A lot of folks on here are so damned brained washed there is no hope for them. So, someone gets scared because someone else does something. ????? Think about it for a damn second. The act of simply picking up a gun can be scarey to some folks. They are working to an end,.... a piece at a time!! You folks on this board had better get used to it because, it will not go away.

    I'm not sure how they even found them wearing the camouflage and all, it must of been those blaze orange plugs that gave them away.

    thye got nabbed because many paintballers use them to do damage to public property. its a great graffiti tool. also too, many neighborhood cars get painted in drive-by's.
    im sure they got picked up pending any reports of vandalizm reported elsewhere.

    A friend of mine got pulled over and almost arrested for pointing a cordless drill at someone in a road rage incident.
    The occupant of the other car called the cops and reported my friend was brandishing a pistol and gave them his license number.

    My friend had some explaining to do after he was pulled over and even showed the police his cordless drill.
    They said they could have still arrested him but let him go on his way.

    Paintball and airsoft are a completely seperate deal. If they didn't threaten anyone with these airsoft guns I don't see a problem. Police in that town must be very bored and they are wrong in this case in my opinion unless the artical didn't include everything.

    As a "device that propels a projectile by spring, air or compressed gas power" airsoft guns are outlawed in many cities under the same ordinances that regulate use of or ban BB guns, pellet guns, bows & arrows, paintball guns, blowguns, etc.

    This isn't exactly common knowledge and, at least in my area, the cops generally just make the people aware of it and tell them to take them home.

    Here's what these folks in the story got charged with, straight from Wisconsin's penal code:

    947.01 Disorderly conduct. Whoever, in a public or private place, engages in violent, abusive, indecent, profane, boisterous, unreasonably loud or otherwise disorderly conduct under circumstances in which the conduct tends to cause or provoke a disturbance is guilty of a Class B misdemeanor.

    They must have a pretty broad definition of "disturbance" up that way.

    Just wondered how you would feel if you lived next to the park and 3 men there waiting on other men to show up near or after dark running around playing war games. It did say 9:10 PM. Could scare the kids or maybe not. Did you consider that thier might be people wanting to use the park without dodging a paintball ? Don't think they should have been charged with anything though.

    I'm sure that it would have been no problem if they had gone into any public store of any kind as they were described above, they are lucky they were not confronted by someone with a carry permit, if it were me they would of had problems, not ones that i brought on but them.

    So let me get this straight, you would of gone out there to confront them with your concealed handgun instead of letting the authorities handle it? Ok Rambo slow down and think about it for a second.... No shots fired. I highly doubt they were threatening anyone or causing a scene since they were laying down in the grass. /sigh

    This happened to my son @ a month ago. They had permission to "airsoft" at the park but away from the play ground equipment. So how they ended up by the bathrooms and a bystander got shot. The cops were called and all the airsoft guns were taken that night and the boys could pick them up the next day. My son was one of the youngest ones up there but I still chewed his butt for being up at the bathrooms. I told him that he should have known better to be up there. The next evening we go up to get his guns. The officer who confiscated them is the Chief Of Police and also my son's assistant track coach. We get up there and there are air soft balls all over the floor. He said that my son's full auto was a blast to shoot. I thought it was handled very well. It could have been blown way out of proportion. BTW, I live in a town with about 1200 people.

    Bacically yes.

    I don't remember the exact caliber, but they shoot little white plastic balls which are close to BB size. These start out at a decent velocity, but lose velocity/power quickly due to such light weight.

    These are very accurate reproduductions of popular firearms, from Glock handguns to MP5's/M16's and may be either semiauto or full-auto.

    A common complaint I hear about Airsoft shooters playing around in public parks late at night comes from people having to deal with their trash. They don't like having these projectiles scattered all over sidewalks, picnic tables and playgrounds the next day.

    I saw a mention of illegal mexican gangs practicing war games with paintball guns in L.A. being busted and sent to a deportation facility. Trouble is; L.A. is too close to the border to have a detention facility.
    Airsoft guns are cool, and they even make an airsoft shotgun. Birds eat the pellets and drop them on my car. Yecch!

    I would never let my kids go to a public park in a city and let them play with their soft air guns. I would not even want to take the chance that someone might mistake them for real guns and I end up with a dead kid. We have played with soft air and just recently with paintball (first time for me-my kids are experts) here on my property, and I have let my kids go to other friends and play but most parents I know use common sense.

    That being said, I was heading towards a combination birthday/paintball party that my son was at and to my great surprise, as I approached, I see my son coming down the shoulder of the road towards me on an unlicensed dirtbike.

    Well, I about went ballistic. I wrote numerous tickets for that over the years. (I also gave warnings-depending on the circumstance-for those who want to flame me.) I told the parent that if I was still a LEO, he would have been getting one for allowing a minor to ride unlawfully. Between him and my son, there were at least 4 violations that I routinely warned or wrote tickets for. I took my son home a short time later and he got it good-and I mean spanked-for not calling and asking before getting on that bike.

    Now I don't have nothing against dirt bikes, (in fact I had just made a deal on 2 of them for the kids when this occurred) I do have a problem with another parent allowing my kid to violate the law while in his care. He had no idea of my son's riding abilities and they were not in a position to see my son if something happened.

    I feel the same way about airsoft. Another parent should have enough common sense not to go let their kids and/or mine go to a public park and run around with what could easily be mistaken for a real gun. I have always told my kids and the kids of friends, that if they even see a police car in the area, they are to drop the gun and take a step back from it, until the car has left or the officer gives them further instructions. Most times I am either out there watching while they play or watching from inside the house.

    That being said, I think the proper course of action would have been to take the guns and have the parents pick them and the kids up right then and there. Many times in my career, I made calls to parents to find out they had no idea that their child was not at the friends house he was supposed to be at.

    If I could not reach the parents, then I would probably take the guns and have the parents pick them up later. (Most times, if we had a juvenile breaking the law or found in a dangerous situation, we would not leave until they had been turned over to a family member over 18.) My former department even had a form called a "property seizure record" so that both us and the person the property was taken from would have a receipt and record of what was taken and from whom.

    We normally only seized property when it was evidence or possible evidence of a crime and I may have used "disordely person" as a reason on the seizure record, I highly doubt that would fly in court if it were challenged. BUT, if the kid was a jerk, he might not get any compassion from me and he might have ended up just like these kids. I kind of had a saying that I used when people would complain about a ticket. I would say, "Yeah, but I would rather give you ten tickets then to come to your house and tell you your kid was dead just once." Now if they were 19 like in this post, I suspect the latter may have taken place.

    I just think we adults need to use our heads more when it comes to these kinds of things.
