I didn't lock it after having the last word because I wasn't in the conversation. I stated that the question had been answered, and that from the tone of the replies it might turn into some unkind comments, so I locked it to prevent an argument from developing. There was no real argument yet so how could I have had the last word? I wasn't disagreeing with anyone so there was no last word to have, for crying out loud.
Sometimes you can just tell when a thread is going to get contentious so you have to do something. The guy asked a question; it was answered; and I locked it to prevent a squabble from starting.
What's the big deal?
It sounds to me like anyone who is unhappy that the thread got locked was planning to start a fight. What, you wanna beat up on the new guy? Give him a break, will ya? Just start a new thread if you want to talk about what he brought up and leave him out of it.
And don't make it about me, OK? Really, I'm not that interesting. [B)]
If anyone wants to talk about AR15s vs. M16s then start a thread discussing that topic. Nobody's stopping you.
Holy cow, Doug, there's a couple thousand open threads. Is your day really ruined because one got locked?
Since it seems very important to some of you, anyone wishing to have the last word should please feel free to post it, now.0 -

Did I make it before this one got locked??0 -

You posted an opinion before saying you were going to lock it. How is that not posting your opinion and then locking the thread? Don0 -
I repeated what had already been said. Give me a break, Don. You are just looking for fault. Try to be more positive for a change.

Qoute:
I always assume that questions are asked in good faith.
bandit 44 asked about buying an AR15 or an M16 and as others noted no new full-auto guns can be built or converted (I guess maybe if you have a legally registered auto sear setting around you can convert one) since the 1986 law went into effect.
The AR15 ($500-$1,200) would be much cheaper although maybe not as much fun as an M16 ($15,000 - $25,000).
I'm going to lock this because the question has been answered and I think any additional comments would just be unkind or inflammatory.
Nothing personal... it's just business.
There is also personal opinion in the quotes. Not stating a fight, just trying to be PC. You asked me once to back up my claims with proof. Don0 -

I didn't want to pick on the guy - I thought I might have something to add to the dialog.
I think it may considered to be a little insulting to assume that no one could add anything worthwhile to the thread.

But a common misconception. Don0 -
Doug- Believe it or not there are people besides yourself participating.
Locking the thread wasn't done to shut you up. It wasn't meant to curtail the postings of any particular individual. It was to prevent someone (other than you) who may have been thinking about jumping on the new guy. We don't want to rat-pack a new guy, do we? Some of the responses were starting to get a little sarcastic and I didn't want it to escalate into a fight.
I still don't understand why this is such a big deal.
Like I said, don't take it personally.
Only Don can do that.
Either one.
They are interchangeable as far as I am concerned. [:D]0 -

I did not take it personal. I took it as a last post and then a lock. Of course you do not do that. No problem here as the problem does not occur. Don0 -
rat packing is allowed for a few... why not all[:0][:D][:D][:D] 0 -

The problem is that an assumption was made, and no one can understand what that assumption was made on. It seems that one moderator always assumes the worst. How can you know what someone else was thinking? Unless you have talents that you haven't blessed us with by telling us about, you can't know in advance. Why not wait, let a post run its course, and IF it gets bad, then lock 'er down? Why just assume that the topic will turn bad? I'm sure Doug had a pearl of great wisdom to add to the thread, and now we have all been denied reading it. Conceivably, it could have changed the course of human history, ended world hunger, and allowed us to find Osama bin Laden. Oh well...guess it was better to lock 'er down!0 -
Don, I think that we disagree on two points.
1: What constitutes this "having the last word" that upsets you so much. To me, this would be if a moderator were participating in a debate; a difference of opinion; and after stating his case or making a point then locking the thread to prevent rebuttal. You seem to think that any comment at all by a moderator prior to locking the thread is this "having the last word."
Do you visit other forums? I do and most of the time the moderators will post a comment if only to explain why the thread is being locked. This is fairly customary. I posted an agreement with what had been said, welcomed the new member, apologized for locking, and said I was doing it to prevent potential arguing. Just what exactly is wrong with this? Why are you fixating on it? Is this really a big issue in your life? Must you take this so seriously? Is it really worthy of complaint? Can't we just shrug and move on? I'm pretty sure the world will keep spinning and life will go on if a thread gets locked from time to time.
2: Um... I can't recall what my second point was. That's the problem with arguing with old people, we forget what we were arguing about.
Please, can we drop it and move on, now?0 -
You have amazing insights !!
Those are the things I was gonna do...but...unfortunately...my train of thought was interrupted and it is all lost to humanity, now.
Doug0 -
iluvguns- I never said I was perfect. We are asked to prevent arguments and I do the best I can. When the comments turn sarcastic you can sort of see what's coming.
Again, why make a big deal out of one locked thread? It's not quite the tragedy some people want to make it out to be.0 -
Doug- Again, how many times do I have to say it? Start a new thread with your pearls of wisdom that you think we can't live without. Just don't be insulting or argumentative when dispensing all the genius that pours forth. 0 -
