I used the advertised appraisal site for my Steyr

On the Gun Broker for sellers page they have listed....

as a good place to go for appraisals on your items.

I am semi-happy with what they have told me about my Steyr. They actually declined to tell me really ANYTHING about my gun....but at least they made me feel better about not knowing much about it myself...and that is enough for me (not a high maintenance gal...am I?)

This is a bit of what they have told me....

Your request for an appraisal has been rejected by our gun experts and has gone into our appraisal pool.

I have researched our gun appraisal archive and find no similar weapon appraised. However, I have done some research using another database and hopefully the information contained in the comparable will give you some idea as to value.


Then they go onto list the history of Steyr (like I didn't know...but nice filler for their message anyway) and then gave links to other guns for sale that were somewhat LIKE mine...which I already had done myself.

I really did like that I am not crazy in my confusion...I had caught a bit of slack on the ask the experts forum when I asked about it so I thought I was "slacking" when I ran into this one...and paying them the $19.95 to see they weren't any better than me was well worth it!!![:D]

    I used an online appraisal site once that was offering a free trial period, so I though, might as well. I sent in detailed pictures and description of my UNISSUED, unimport marked, Enfield No.5 Carbine, that looked as if it had been in a safe since bought way back when. They also gave me a brief history report on the gun, then said there was little collector intrest and it was worth $150 tops. Of course I already knew all about this gun, I was just trying out their service. Turned around and stuck it here on GB starting at $1 and it brought over $500 from a collector in England.

    I'll never understand how a person can't just search closed auctions on GB and know what their gun is worth, assuming they know what they have.

    The gun I am trying to figure out is a Steyr Diamlher Puch in 243...it is a carbine with one safety on the bolt and another on the side of the reciever. The gun measures 41 inches overall, 21 inch barrel to the bolt face. The bolt is a butter knife style handle...and it is NOT drilled or tapped....but has the extremely hard to find Austrian scope mounts (which I beleve are quick release)installed on the gun with a very old Lyman scope. The color of the barrel and reciever are a dark shiney charcoal black...and not the shiney slate grey you would think it would be. The stock is varnished....and not the oil rubbed you may expect an older Steyr to be. I just have several questions about what may be original or re-finished. I also have seen these listed from $900 to $6,000 so it is not one you will be able to just compare to what others are selling. Plus....this is the WORST time of year to try to sell anything so I would like any hints on what may help this one go better.

    That makes it the best time of year for us buyers[8D]
    so my hint would be to list at 1.00 like you always do and I guarentee you will know what it is worth at the end of the auction. Atleast what its worth this month[;)][:D]

    That was basically my result when I tried the service a while back. They said they didn't know anything about it, and maybe I could try and look up similar guns to see what they were selling for. Thanks a bunch, I hadn't thought of that.

    I used them because I was hoping to get a neutral third-party opinion about how fantastically rare and valuable the piece was. Got my asking price w/o it.

    With this odd thing I have here I am more worried about the stock having the varnish...and parts being original. I have caught heck with a Winchester 41 before...it had some replaced parts and I had to refund $$$ and I hate to refund $$$!!! grrrrr!

    Do what you think is right, but I don't think I'd pay somebody twenty bucks to tell me they don't know as much as I do. If I did pay it, I'd do my share of kicking and screaming before I did. Nope, on second thought, I wouldn't pay it.

    The way that site works.....you type in your contact info and register....you pick what type of appraisal you want...put in the information on your item.....then PAY with a credit card. I just really did it to see what details they would give. I can't imagine that I will EVER try their service again, but who knew what they were going to tell me.

    Its probobly one of those things that is better for collectable pottery or paintings. Guns would be difficult to appraise...but anyone who deals a little in guns can appraise 90% of what is out there....its that little 10% of odd ball stuff that I seem to end up with. People like to give me a hard time because I didn't know something....but I dang well know a lot....not everything...but a good base for confusing the heck out of myself.

    $19.95 for a useless appraisal[?]... I will only charge you $19.94 for appraising any Winchester, Browning A5, or Ithaca SxS[:D], and it will be an actual appraisal[:0].
