thinking about getting this...
i am thinking about getting this dog. i will be saving it from being put to sleep. the current owner says it will not hunt. he has only had it out 2x and has not worked with it at all. my next step is to convince the wife. i will do that this weekend when we go look at the dog. wish me luck.

Good Luck! I favor cats, but they all get to be family. I did once have a beagle that was totally hopeless in the field, so it does happen, but likely the problem is in the dog's handler unit and probably a new one will solve the problem. 0 -

Out two times and wont hunt. Thats called a lazy hunter going to take more than 2 times to train a dog. Other dogs along work real well. 0 -

ANY dog will hunt, given proper training.
We had beagles (of course hunters) train three of our German Shepherds and one Old English Sheepdog how to hunt.
Gotta picture this...do you know how hard it is to see a Sheep Dog on point...without a tail (they are bobbed)??? Yeah...did not know if he was taking a break or if he was "on point".
One of the best field dogs I have ever seen is a German Shepherd. Dog just did not know when to give up. Every bird would fly...I believe because the dog was so big.
Probably in the top two "hunting dogs"....blue healer. Only problem with them, they usually try to capture and kill the bird, rabbit, mouse, barn swallow, or ROCK before they tell you about it.
Funniest thing we ever experienced. Healer chased a rabbit into some brush, hear the commotion of him getting after the rabbit, and he comes out with a rabbit....but smelling like a skunk!! He could not figure out why we would not let him ride in the cab of the pickup. Do you think he was color blind? Lost his sense of smell?0 -

Sharp looking GSP. Is it black or brown? Not that it matters but I don't think black is accepted breed color. I've never seen a GSP that would not hunt... now teaching it to give a s*&t about about hunting with you is another story. Sounds like fun to me... 0 -

our healer is quite a hunter around the property, but he usually just herds them to the stone wall around the border and then stands up on his hind legs to watch and make sure they keep going! funny as all get-out. and they are quick enough that even tho they usually have a lead, he damned near "heals" the deer before they reach the line!
he does a real nice "point" sometimes too, but he is only a year old, still too puppyish to get serious0 -
Fine looking German Shorthair. I owned one for 10 years. Great bird dog, great instincts. If nothing else, it will be the most loyal, faithful dog you could get. 0 -
I have a lab. He doesn't hunt and I don't care. He is a great companion, and the smartest dog I ever had. Were I in your shoes, I would rescue the pointer in a minute. 0 -

German shorthairs are great dogs. I had one and my Dad sold it when I went away to college[V]. They hunt good, but if they get on a deer trail, they will sometimes try to run it, but then again beagles do that too I think. Please get that dog, I wish I had mine back. 0
