Bought Me A Dodge Diesel..
Finally broke down and bought one. A Dodge Heavy Duty 2500 Diesel 4door(not mega cab) 4x4 Big Horn Edition. Got it this week and sure am enjoying it. I traded a 96 Ford F250 XLT, 96 Buick Roadmaster & a 94 Buick Roadmaster in on it.. Now I'm down to one 94 Roadmaster and the new truck..[^] I had them to put running boards, handrails & a spray in bedliner in on the deal.. Its a bright white kinda like this one..

My dad just bought a new one in late Dec. He's never had a diesel before and he loves it...and he's extremely impressed with the power. It's up to 21.5 mpg right now...hopefully that will increase some. My 2001 is still running strong...it's going to be a couple years before I can step up to a new one. I want the Mega Cab 3500 series dually long bed next time around.[:)] 0 -

You think that you like it now... wait several months[^]. I have had mine for just a tad over two years now (39K+ miles), and I like it more everyday. It will take several months for you to break in the Cummins engine (unless you drive it a lot like I do). My average fuel economy is 19.5 mpg, and I get as much as 22.5 @freeway speed... and mine is a 3500 Quad Cab 4x4 w/8' box (6-speed manual tranny). 0 -
It had 6 miles on it when I drove it off the lot. I filled it up yesterday and all it got was 15 MPG.. Hope it gets better. This is the first diesel I've ever owned.. Many years ago I drove the big rigs but thats been awhile.
What diesel prices in your areas..? I filled up yesterday and paid $2.36 per gal.0 -

Your gas mileage will increase for quite a while...Dad's started off around 15-16 mpg as well. Diesel here is running 2.99/gal. That is one thing I do not like about this state. Gas prices are at least .50/gal more than most of the rest of the country.0 -

They do not make the Mega Cab with an 8' box... truck would be too long. The box length on the Mega is 6.5', with an OAL of 21' (same as the Quad Cab w/8' box).0 -

Does your new truck have an Auto or Manual tranny? The Auto tranny drops your fuel economy by nearly 3 mpg in normal commuting, and about 1 mpg on the freeway. Diesel is $2.89 where I live[V].
One thing else you need to know... Dodge says that it is a 35 gallon tank, but it will actually hold 40 gallons. When the pump first kicks off, let it sit for about a minute, then slowly pump in 5 more gallons. The new ULSD foams up terribly and it causes the pump to kick off long before your tank is actually full. I have run my tank down to the point where the computer says "0" miles DTE, and then pumped it full (38 gallons to fill it). The book says that there is a 2-3 gallon reserve after it hits the "0" DTE.0 -

Its automatic trans. and thanks for the info. Yep, they said it had a 35 or 36 gal tank but its good know it'll hold a little more. Plan on going to Dallas in a week or so to see the kids and then up to Tulsa to see a cousin and do a little fishing (if it warms up)0 -

They are hulks to drive and park. My Ford 4x4 won't go in my garage. Too tall, clearance lights will hit. 0 -

Beauty. I like your choice, my grandfather has a 96 2500 and it has 140K miles on it and he hasn't touched it. I've heard more than one example of guys going 500K-600K miles without touching the engine. Good choice. 0 -

I have new Cooper Tires going on in the morning. Decided to go with a 285/75/16 all terrain. Truck will set just a little higher. I checked the bumper height and if it hit my corvette broadside the bumper would go just a little below the sideglass . 0 -
I'm running 315x75R16's (BF Goodrich Mud Terrains) with a 2.5" lift. I should have gone with a 4" lift b/c my tires are rubbing a little on the front.
Select...if you are planning on driving in any kind of mud, I strongly recommend going with a mud terrain over the AT's. The diesel engine does not have the RPM's to clean the tread out on the AT's. I had AT's on before switching to Mud terrains...and I got burried b/c of it. I love AT's on a gas engine, but I will never put them on a diesel again.0 -
I was just reading an article last night in Petersons 4x4 magazine about the new 6.7 liter Cummins they're going to be putting in the Dodge trucks. Something like 650 lbs/ft of torque. They're also working on a new V-6 diesel for the 1/2-ton pickups. 0 -

Lowrider...I'm fairly certain that the current Cummins is putting out over 600 ft lbs of torque.
I've also heard that they are going to be introducing diesels to some of their SUV's.
One more beautiful thing about these Cummins is that you can easily bolt on 500 more HP and torque...0 -

The 2004.5 and later Cummins are all 600 series 5.9L I-6 engines, and they out put 325 HP @2800 rpm and 610 ft/lbs of torque @1600 rpm. With a Banks or Bully Dog kit, they can be boosted to 470 HP and 890 ft/lbs of torque... after driving mine through the break-in, I was not able to convince myself that I needed any additional power[8D]0 -

Congrats! I Have had my dodge D250 cummins turbo since 91 Have close to 275k on it and no problems.Just keep up with the oil changes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!And she will last for ever[:D] 0 -
Mine has 180,000 miles on it now. Keeps running better all the time. The new fuel mandated by congress gets 2 mpg less than the old fuel did.
Go to www.fs2500.com and buy the filter kit. Break your motor in for 20,000 miles on standard oils then go to MOBIL DELVAC 1 it is 100% synthetic. It will last FOREVER I change it every 50,000 miles. Change your filters every 10,000 and never look back. You cummins will last forever or about 900,000 miles.0 -

There is no practical or noticable difference between 1400 rpm and 1600 rpm... way less than one second on the acceleration curve.0
