Gun-cleaning kit prompts evacuation at Baylor
Officials at the Baylor College of Medicine ordered an evacuation of the campus today after a gun-cleaning kit and an empty box of shells were discovered in a classroom.
An assistant professor was about to teach a class about 1:30 p.m. when she spotted a paper bag on a side table containing the cleaning kit and the empty box.
"There was oil on it (the cleaning kit) so obviously it had been used," said Dr. Peter Traber, president of the medical school.
Campus security officers were notified about the discovery. Within the hour, the alert was announced over Baylor's public address system as automatic e-mail and voice mail messages were relayed to students and staffers, officials said.
"We sent them home and told them the campus would be closed until the (Wednesday) morning," Traber said.
Minutes after the public address warning was sounded, a man told security officers that the items belonged to him and were left over from a weekend sporting trip.
"We were able to question him and search the appropriate areas," Traber said.
At no time was there ever a gun on the campus, officials said.
Baylor College officials declined to identify the person who left the items in the classroom but said he is not facing any disciplinary measures.
In light of violent incidents like the mass shooting at Virginia Tech, Traber said it was only prudent to order the campus-wide evacuation that affected thousands of students and staffers.
"In today's world we've unfortunately had a very good example of where this type of thing can lead," Traber said. "The safety of our employees, students and faculty is the number one issue."

I have long noticed that they are more afraid of peaceful, lawful citizens who like and own guns than they are of the violent criminals. One example of this is the "no guns" signs or "gun free zone" signs. How many murderous madmen intending on going on a shooting/killing rampage are going to be stopped by some goofey sign? The only people stopped by those goofey signs are the peaceful, lawful gun carrying citizens.
THE VERY PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT GOING TO CAUSE A PROBLEM and, if trouble does break out, they just might be able to put a quick stop to that trouble if they had their gun.
The best thing to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. When seconds can mean death, the police are only minutes away.0 -

My question is....Why in hell would a sane person even take anything gun related onto a campus anyway? Isn't that asking for trouble in the first place? Even an empty .22 cartridge in your pocket can get you in trouble nowadays. Use some common sense! [:0][:0]

If death in imminnent in seconds, it doesn't matter if the police are 3 minutes or 30 minutes away. The victim is still going to die.

If "common sense" were still being used, your comment in red above would not describe the world as it has become. Pretty soon you will be arrested just because you bring a gun case or rifle scope to school. And maybe in one of your classes (or after class) you wanted to repair/work on one of those items. But it is difficult, if not impossible, to kill someone with a gun case or rifle scope alone.0 -

I understand what you are saying. But, it's like defensive driving. You have to be on the defensive at all times with the crazies around you and not put yourself in the position being harmed. You have to use common sense, it's not that they do......[:)][:)]

What would have happened if they may have found an another " scary " gun item with the cleaning kit and empty brass !!! Say like a gun magazine ( GUNS & AMMO ) AND A CAMPUS MAP.
