What to do help??

I went over to my little range this AM to fire my new 1911 and heard cry's from what sounded like small kittens. I looked around and sure enough they were some very young kittens under a old Highway sign (4"tx4") I plan to use to widen the small dam over at the cabin. Ive watched off and on all morning for the stray mother to come to them. I dont think she would leave them alone this long as small as they are? Should I move the kittens to a better bed and try to feed them, or just keep watching for their mom to show up? I know they must be hungry and maybe cold.

  How big are the kittens?...how many?...are their eyes open yet?...That will help me guesstimate the age ...Right now the best thing you can do is get some cat food for mom...She was probably out looking for food for herself, and if you feed her you will be helping the kittens...and by the way, leave them there ...mom will probably be back..

  I agree with BR and leave the kittens where they are.
  It would be hard to scare a mother cat away from her kittens long enough for the kittens to suffer.

  Get food for mom ASAP. Check back tonight to see if any of the food has been eaten. If not, or if any of the kittens have passed then you need to take them to safety. Many cats that have litters off a 1st or 2nd heat will abandon the kittens. Best thing is to put some food out for mom and if the kittens get moved continue to put food out in the same place. Mom will come back for more food if you put it in the same place around the same time.

  IF the kittens are very young, and you decide to move them, you become their mom....Feedings every 2 hours, or you may have to learn how to tube feed...you have to empty the bowels and bladder, keep them warm etc...and its every 2 hours even at night...
  
  IF they are older its a bit easier....and with all the cats I work with every day, plus dealing with the vets, I have never known a cat to abandon its own except in one case where the mother was moved...

  Others offer good advice -- give Mom a chance. But if she doesn't show up, pick up a kitten to see if it feels cold and acts listless. If so, it's getting nearly too late. I've had this experience. I managed to save two of five by eye-droppering milk into them, rubbing their butts with a warm, wet tissue so they would poop, and putting them under a heat lamp. If you give them milk, don't use straight cow's milk. Water it down by about half. Saving kittens is do-able, because they can eat on their own at about a month. But you'll have your hands full until they get that old. Good luck and bless you for caring about them.
