According to The Winchester Book by George Madis, there were approximately 19,000 of these made before 1958 when they were discontinued. However, production was resumed in 1977 and this appears to be one of the later production cannons.

OK, there is a definite need to clear up some inaccurate information concerning this topic.

The original Winchester Breech Loading Cannon was the Model 1898, and it was introduced in the March 1903 catalog. Winchester manufactured 18,400 of them befotre discontinuing them at the end of 1958.

In 1976, Winchester licensed the Bellmore-Johnson Tool Company to use the legend "WRA Co." on both side plates of a replica of the Model 1898 Breech Loading Cannon. The barrel of this later made cannon will be marked as follows; "Mfg. by the Bellmore-Johnson Tool Co., Hamden, Ct., under license from the Winchester Div., Olin Corp."

The cannon listed on the subject auction is one of the latter made replica cannons.

Both the original and the replicas are chambered for a 2-7/8" 10 ga. blank shell (i.e. you can NOT shoot standard 10 gauge shells in it).
