'Nightmare' tarantula

SMITHTOWN, N.Y. - An orange tarantula with venomous fangs was rescued Friday after its owner said he could no longer care for it. "This is the kind of spider that nightmares are made of," said Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
He said the spider is aggressive and can jump 3 feet and bite with its large fangs. The bites are dangerous to humans.
Gross said he was glad the owner, whose name was not released, called the SPCA instead of dumping the spider.
"This spider is so aggressive, it will bite you just to bite you," he said. "It's not a pet you want to cuddle up with at night."
The SPCA took the spider to a sanctuary for reptiles and other animals.

Having lived in Arizona for over 20 years, I can tell you that desert tarantulas cannot jump, are often kept as "pets" (they must be fed live crickets), do have fangs, can bite, are not venomous, but the bite is quite painful.
Now, are those of you professing such fear of spiders the same people who claim their guns will have to be "pried from my dead fingers"??

The spider, known as an ornate golden baboon, has a fat body 5 inches long that is covered in orange hair. Male baboon spiders can have a leg span of about 8 inches, and the female is even larger.

Baboon spiders have a life span of up to 25 years, are native to southern Africa and spend most of their time near their nests, which are usually holes in the ground.

spiders suck and yes you can have it when you pry it from my cold dead hands means I a'int giving it up willingly, apparently something hard to understand?0 -
They're actually pretty delicate creatures. Unless you're a cricket or other tasty bug, you're chances of getting bitten are much less than getting bitten by the local gansta's Pit Bull...yo.
I've not been bitten, but have handled a few of them. They (from what I'm told) are most inclined to bite a person or creature who is squeezing them. And who likes to be squeezed?
Fangs would make a big hole, and all spiders are venemous, but the Tarantula's bite isn't life threatening, except for the big holes and subsequent infection.
I'm much more leery of Brown Recluse spiders which are much smaller, can get into your home much easier, and unlike Tarantulas which do not live in heavily populated areas, can be found anywhere.
Bites are much nastier, as well.

Understood. But not believed. Because it's a cliche mouthed by too many members of the Gun Culture as they think it's "cute".
Sort of like the stupidity shown by placing a pic of a revolver pointing straight at you on the window of your house or vehicle, proclaiming "Protected by Smith & Wesson".
Prosecutors love to point that one out, after one uses his firearm in self-defense, to prove pre-existing recklessness.

sanctuary ??? The only sanctuary that should have been given is a grave! Having "broken bread" with some more than memorable "bugs" in RVN I do not care to give sanctuary to one that should not even be in this contry to beging with! 0 -

fishermanben.... The brown recluse bite is a serious problem at best case.. Recommed you consider getting a darned good pest control company in there to treat the house and grounds, and move out until it is cleared. I lost a good friend to a brown recluse bite that went bad while he was in the hospital being treated! 0 -

Pics of aftermath of brown recluse bites are pretty disturbing, to say the least! Conservation Department here in Missouri says that they found evidence of brown recluse habitation in 25% of the family homes tested!0 -

I'm in an 1800s railroad depot, and I'm sure the spiders have been here for at least that long. You don't ever see them, even though there is an infestation. If you do see them, it's from moving a box or something, and the little suckers are gone in a split second. They aren't aggressive at all.
We have a company spray multiple times a year.

Spiders and snakes always seem to bring out the BS in major quantities. Baboon spiders CANNOT jump 3 feet. They are aggressive though. There are thousands being kept as pets around the country. 0 -
