C&R License, Pro's and Con's

I buy, Trade, and collect alot of guns thoughout the year and am thinking of getting a C&R license.


What do you guys think[?]

    Don't do it.

    It will cost you $30 for 3 years and will allow you to have C&R guns (rifles, shotguns, pistols) to be mailed or shipped directly to your house without having to pay a person who has a FFL and without having to complete the ATF Forms.

    THIS IS NOT A SAVINGS BECAUSE YOU WILL THEN DROOL OVER THE ADVERTISEMENTS AND ORDER, THUS DEPLETING YOUR BANK ACCOUNT.

    Make sure your safe(s) are big enough. [:D]

    I buy about 50 guns a year and resale about 40 to 45 of them. Just thought that getting a C&R would save me alot on the ffl fees.

    Its really a simple process... for $30 the license pays for itself after a couple gun purchases. Theres really no reason not to get one.

    Just make sure that you do not make a habit of reselling the guns you buy with the C&R license. A few is ok, but the ATF will start getting nosy if it appears you are running a business with your C&R. If you do intend to run a business selling guns, it makes more sense to go with the full-fledged FFL 01.

    I have to agree with Hairy. I sent copys to SOG and about a dozen others I don't remember and got all their rags. I have spent hundreds of dollars I probably would not have otherwise. I keep looking for the delivery girl the others keep posting pictures of but ole Steve keeps bringing me my C&R rifles. Tom

    Well, As previusly stated i do resale a big portion of the guns i get. So should i get a Pawnbrokers license or do i have to get a dealers license.



    I have been doing some reserch. Can't find out the difference between a Pawnbroker license and A dealers license.[?] They cost about the same.

    As Disciple said- if you are devoting time to buying and selling to make a profit- that is an 01 FFL- regardless of age of weapon or classification. There is not magic number of guns that moves you from collecting to dealing- question is are you devoting time to this to make a living at it? I'm an 03. I buy an M-1 Carbine. Later, I find a better example. I buy it, and decide to sell the first one TO FURTHER MY COLLECTION. That is legit. But an 03 is not a license to engage in the business of dealing in ANY guns. Says that right on the license. Most fun you can have for 30 bucks. If you don't save 30 bucks in 3 yrs on transfer fees, and discounts from wholesalers, you ain't trying!

    Should have mentioned- to get an 01 FFL, you will need to show you are in compliance with state and local laws- do you have a place of business that is zoned for business? Sales tax paperwork, business license, etc? If your home is your "place of business" you just opened it to unannounced inspections by the ATF, etc.

    My family owns and runs a small town appliance store. Talked to my dad about it and he thinks we could convert a spot in the store to a room for gun sales perty easily.


    Would that count.[?]

    I love my C&R and while it has saved me many dollars in buying, it has also cost me lots in my everyday hunt and collecting of some really neat and priceless treasures that my kids will inherit. I just hope they will love them as much as I have. The ultimate license would be the main FFL but I just don't have the time for it.

    You don't have to buy a single gun to have it make sense. You will get your money back with the discounts on 2 or 3 orders from Midway, Graf's etc.

    I agree with most. Best thing I did. But, on the con side, you must keep proper records and are required to abide by the rules. All in all, a good investment. IMHO [8D]

    not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but will a C&R put more of a spotlight on you than filling out the forms at the gunshop for the transfer? What I mean is everything I own is legal, I just don't won't to give the gov. more of a chance to snoop on me than they already have, as I already think they have too much power in meddling in people's private affairs.
