What he said, unless you're looking at the experts forum, in which case all posts get locked after 10 replies.

...whenever the posting guidelines are violated and the mod decides it does not need to be poofed but wants the topic to go away, none the less. Moderators and Admin make these decisions.

In the experts forum, topics get locked after 10 replies...

There are some hot button topics that are quick to get locked out.

There are a couple of moderators that like to lockout more than others.
    Another moderator prefers to poof.

Personally, I enjoy a free flow of communication.

As others have noted, there are a variety of reasons why topics get locked or deleted. Sometimes it's because it's a prohibited topic (like complaining about auctions) or someone gets a little too excited and the discussion turns into an argument, etc. Please check the posting guidelines for a better understanding of how it works.

Despite what some members think and say, we try to be fair and apply the rules evenly. Sometimes it looks unfair because we can't be everywhere at once but we try our best. At least I do and I know that Eric (ECC) and David (nunn) work hard to keep things running smoothly which is the goal.

I also prefer the free flow of ideas so let's not violate the guidelines and the info can keep flowing. [:D]

I think a better question would be why are some threads NOT locked, like this one

You will also be locked out if you don't send the moderator any Christmas cookies.

If there's a secret handshake nobody ever told me about it. As far as I know everyone gets treated the same.

The moderators lock topics because they hate the poster. There is no other reason it is just pure hatred driven by inner demons and a sense of omnipotent power. Sometimes; they lock them by playing darts on the keyboard blindfolded. Other times a cash bribe or offering of free guns and ammo may sway them to lock a topic or two.

OK, I get it now. I really thought it was the cookies. Thanks for the clarification. [:D]

I'm just curious. Is there a way a moderator can block a particular poster from posting on a topic rather than locking the whole topic. Some valid topics get locked due to a couple of bad eggs. Though I do realize they can just come back under an alias.

Moderators have very limited powers. We can delete a post or a topic, or lock a thread and that's it. We can't lock out a member.

Yeah, locking the threads sometimes isn't enough, i guess. Have to wonder why some disappear completely though. Was it possibly because tacking1 was spot on in his observasions...?[;)]

Whining about moderators must be a lot of fun, we spend a lot of time doing it. Get over it or go somewhere you like better. It is not a democracy and you do not get a vote.
