The Golden Compass
I received a flyer from my daughter's school yesterday regarding this movie. (She goes to a Christian school.) I had seen the previews and thought it may be a good movie because it seemed along the Chronicles of Narnia line. Well I found out... searched snopes and online about the movie and the books author and found out that the guy kills off God in his 3rd book and it is causeing all kinds of outrage at schools/church and such. He is wanting to show the "other side" of the Chronicles of Narnia.
So my question is this...Do people think we can really boycot everything we dont agree with? There is no way of knowing who all our monies support with each dollar we spend. I figure if you raise you child well then seeing one movie for entertainment is not going to sway them Do I like giving my money to people I disagee with? no... but it's going to happen, usually daily. What do you guys think?

A Christian school will not show it. My devout Catholic friend hates the Harry Potters and believes we are teaching whichcraft to our children by letting them watch it.
I bought him the entire series for him and told him to watch it before passing judgement (he hasn't seen any). He says he will.0 -
Ga...I read this as well. Snopes has a huge bunch of info on it.
As I understand, with limited exposure to the material, is that it is pointedly athiestic.
Good or bad, it needs to be known that it is more than just a story, as Harry Potter was. It is directly in opposition to JudeoChristian beliefs, and parents should make judgements based on that.0 -

We always used stuff like this and the crapola you see ballyhoo'd on the news as an "Instructional Cue" for a little training session on how my family thinks and why. She grew up to be a really level-headed Young Woman, of whom I am inordinately proud. 0 -
the movie is disturbing but i think along the same lines as you do gagirl.... i would definatly want to watch it for myself first though.

I think trying to shield your kids from everything you don't agree with/don't want them to agree with is 1) impossible and 2) counterproductive.
Children need guidance in their consumption of media. If you discuss with them what they're watching, what it's saying, and whether/why you agree (or not) with it, you'll be teaching them critical thinking skills so that they can better evaluate the myriad messages they get every day over which you/they have essentially no control.0 -
I won't spend money on things I don't agree with, if I am aware of what their position (agenda) is. I realize that certain businesses are anti Christian, and thats their right in a free society. But I have a right to not give them my money to further their cause. Just as I won't do business a company that is anti gun. 0 -
To me it is not a question of shielding your child from this movie, it is more of a decision on your part if you choose to support and make these people and companies prosper at the detriment of your child's moral compass. I usually choose not to support actors that I do not agree with politically, for example Susan Saranwrap, and her goofball husband Tim Robbins, again my choice. If you choose to support people and companies that are attempting to diminish our lord's sacrifice for us, then that is your choice. I just choose not to for entertainment purposes. 0 -
my oldest boys girlfriends family is deeply religious, they live down the street from my in-laws, understandably they do not participate in halloween, my mother in law trying to be nice sent her home the day after halloween with a boat load of candy, all went well until the mom saw a witch on one of the Reese's packages, and she took it all away and through it in the trash, a bit rude an unesassary from such a christian in my opinion 0 -
i dont understand why churches and or schools would try to ban or boycott anything. it is peoples free will that is being cut short. I remember that my wifes church (yes, i married out of my religion, and without saying what faith either of us are i will say that we had to go through classes before they would wed us in her church.)had a big uproar over the divinci code. said that it was trying to change peoples beleifs and that it was nothing but blasphemy. no good christian would watch this. i read it and watched it. i still consider myself a christian, only i know that there is a difference between fact and fiction. 0 -
If you don't agree with the plot line or philosophies of the writer or filmmaker just don't go see the movie. Period.
If you personally have no misgivings about letting the girl see it, let him go, and form her own conclusions. You needn't justify your decisions as a parent to anyone here.
The Christian "theology watch" has been trying to "ban" movies that it finds objectionable as long as I can remember, and to my recollection has never succeeded in doing anything but providing a lot of advertising for the filmakers.0 -

Furthermore, I don't support the views of the author and will do all I can to spread the word so others do not to support them too. I don't think it would harm any of my kids minds, however allowing them to spend money to see it offends me.0 -

I agree, that is why I won't take kids to Chuck-E Cheese, I do not believe a kids pizza / fun place should serve beer. I have sen enough of what happens when adults get alcohol in them and it is not something for a kids place.0 -
