British repay war loans
More than six decades after the fact, Britain has finally paid back the billions of dollars it had borrowed from the United States and Canada to help pay for rebuilding the country after World War II. At the click of a few computer keys in London on the last business day of 2006, $83.25 million was sent electronically winging to Washington and $22.7 million to Ottawa, to free Britain from annual installments it occasionally has struggled to pay. The original loan of $4.34 billion, the equivalent of $27 billion in today's money, was negotiated by a London team headed by economic mastermind John Maynard Keynes in 1945 to stave off the bankruptcy that posed a serious threat to Britain in the wake of the war's wreckage. The Canadian share of the loan was $1.2 billion.

It's the Britsih thing to do!
... was there ever ANY question ... bloke!??[:o)]0 -
we need to start getting a lot of our money back 0 -
I heard that (up til now) the only country that has paid us back was the Netherlands. 0 -
Those billions were a good investiment - wore down the Nazis and Japs
using somebody else's armies![8D]0 -
Money well spent on both nations' part if you ask me. 0 -
Right-o Howie! 0 -
I had heard that the only country that had paid back its war debts was Finland. They owed Russia, not sure if they owed the U.S. anything. 0 -
Glad to hear that.
The French devalued their currency to deflate their war debt to us.0 -
If we had not have given Africa billions $$ ?? ,we could have payed it off 20yrs ago.
But thats the way our govenment works...polotics ...phew!!!!! [;)]0 -
Very good. But how about the "lend Lease". And the 50 USN Destroyers we "gave them" prior to Dec. 7th '41. And no the Brits are pulling out of Iraq from us. Just wonder after Hurricane Katrina ETC. just how many
countries aided us like we did for them in "bad times" or emergencies.
And for interest on loans to Britian we got 2 percent interest when my G.I, morgage was 4.5 percent after returning from WW 2?0 -
When are they gonna give back the guns we loaned them ???????????

They still owe us M[:D]ND! 0 -
Yes it was money well spent, let the Brits wear down the Krauts and Japs using our guns and ammo.
My dad was involved in a similar, but little known program. He was in the Army Air Corps, stationed in India. They flew cargo planes over the Himalayas and into China. They carried guns, ammo, and lots of gasoline.
Great idea to let the Chinese kill Japs with U.S. materiel.
It was a big operation, and very dangerous. My dad made 74 flights, flying through the passes at 15,000 feet in unpressurized planes. He said that you could navigate the route by seeing the bright aluminum pieces on the ground from crashed C-47s.
I wonder if China owed us a war debt. I hope they paid it off by 1947 because I doubt Mao would have honored a debt to evil capitalists.0 -
The Brits should just have put the money directly into the UN - and written down the US debt...

UN?!
We supply most of their budget, and when have they given us anything?
The brits shoulda just written a check to China for us. 'Cause we owe them alot of money, and they just keep buying up our debt in the form of treasury bonds. I have a feeling by the time I'm old, china will own most of everything in the US - not that the chinese governemt takes over the US, but rather most private buisness and other economic stuff.0 -
free guns from England, please include me in your generous givaway. 0 -

That was a seperate deal. The US got bases in the carribean, and possibly elsewhere, that they may still be using.0
