565,000 evacuees. That is more that the whole state of Wyoming. 0 -
The evacuees being able to return home (at least those who still have homes) is a good sign. You folks down there have been through hell and I just keep hoping that the end is in sight. 0 -

Yes and maybe yes.
We live in a Mediterranean Climate - there are six others like it in the world, including Australia and Greece - they burn as well as we do - for the same ecological reasons.
Here's the deal. All of the native species of plant life NEED fire to reproduce. Actually many, of not most, seeds need at least (about) 500? for a few minutes to germinate and grow.
The 'white man' has carefully put out fires so well that a tremendous amount of 'forest litter' can accumulate between fires. Finally, when a fire DOES burn through an area, it's way too hot and burns up everything, seeds, trees, animals, palefaces, brown and red faces, too, etc.
For the FIRST TIME EVER some of the stupidest palefaces (politicians) are beginning to 'get it!' There may be ( a lot) more routine burnoffs in the future. The injuns around here have
been doing it for thousands of years (until the dumb palefaces made him stop) with great results - more seeds, more trees, plants, animals ... but probably more houses, too!
Anyway, that's the way it is.0 -
Glad it "appears" to be nearing the end!
The arsonists that started at least 2 from what I have heard, should be tied to a stake, doused with gasoline, and lit up, IMHO![}:)]
Happy your place, and your family is safe Zip.0 -
Kinda neat how the Mexicans managed to stop the fires cold right at the border, though.

Thanks for posting those Zip. Stay safe. 0 -
That's good news, Zip. I think the people of California should offer a very loud and public "Thank you" to all of the caring countries and citizens of New Orleans who provided food, water, shelter, money, rescue and security services to you folks during this crisis. 0 -
LOL ... we've thanked all those who came when called and we've thanked our own
who proved their courage and resolve.
... and, of course, we've not been disappointed by the `phoney baloney' politicians
who did as much to try to inflate their own voter base ... as we've seen before/
expected. Arnold was one of the few excptions - he actually came through for us.
