What do I do with a Pigeon?-- Update--
A tame pigeon landed on my porch today. I caught him with my hands. He has an aluminum band on his leg with a number on it. I put him in the cat carrier box, to keep the cat from eating him. I put some whole wheat bread and some water in there.
Is there some registry for these birds?

I don't know what else. I can't really see a pigeon being much of a chick magnet.

...might just be a wayward bird from someone who raises them as a lot of folks into pigeons band theirs...let it go and it will probably go "home"...[;)]

....I shot dozens of banded pigeons at the grain elevator over the years. At the county fair, there is a pretty big bunch of racers. I asked them if they were interested in the bands and where the birds ended up. They said that if the bird was hanging around the elevator, he's not a good racer and probably wouldn't have returned home anyway. I had a pocket full of bands, but the breeder/racers really didn't care about their wayward birds. Cat food. 0 -

Most the guys I know that race'em pull the heads off of any that come in too late.
Lowers their bird AND cat food bill.[;)]

There is a flock of about twenty pigens living in my silo. They have broken almost every window in the barn. Every once & awhile I will go outside with my O/U shotgun and I'll have me daughter go in the silo and yell at the birds. As they fly out of the top I try and pick them off.[8D] It is better then shooting trap. Sometimes they all get through, but most of the time I bag one or two of them. My best was four with one shot.[:p] Never saw any with leg bands.

That web site said to put him in a cage for a day, give him water to drink, and let him go, and he will fly home. Guess I will try that.0 -

Several years ago, a banded pigeon showed up at the bird feeders one day. I put out cracked corn for the mourning doves, so, this bird was in heaven. As far as he was concerned, it was free food and lots of svelte pigeonettes. The local doves considered him to be a god and pretty soon, word of beak spread and there were dozens of doves who were following in the steps of their pigeon-toed guru. Mr Pigeon got fatter and fatter to the point where he could barely fly, just enough to get into the lower branches of a pine tree. Then, one day, the hawk came. 0 -
Nabor raises racing pigeons dunno if he eats them at all or not, however the local high school tore down there old football field stadium and built a new one, when they did all there pigeons came over here now live in the eves of our houses etc.
Anyhow getting sick of them poopting on everything so I looked into it and made a decent "not perfect" pigeon trap haven't tried it out yet cus I've been sick but once I do I'm gonna see how those suckers taste/I may try to raise some for food.0 -

LMAO... My Grandma use to have a large Parrot when I was in grade school. I would let it out of the cage and it would fly around outside and come back to the porch and jump in the cage. One late afternoon a chicken hawk almost caught it and it went in the cage and the Parrot said" Home free" ''Home free". Three days later the hawk flew off with it. Grandma let it out and it didn't come back.0 -

Filet off the breast meat (the rest is cat food). It has the texture of chicken, but the color and flavor of beef.
It works real good in a cassarole, and makes a good contrast to tree rat meat (white and sweet) when served together.
Pidgon also works well on Kobobs, I like to marinate overnight in Teriaki sauce0 -
I found a pigeon guy nearby and he came and got the bird this morning.
He told me that this is a "roller" pigeon. Roller pigeons have the trait of "rolling" in flight. They will fly along normally, at high speed, and then just put on the air brakes so that they tumble along. It will look like a ball of feathers tumbling across the sky if they do it right.
This guy told me that the bird had a band from some local pigeon club, and not a national club. If it had a band from one of the national clubs, I would have been able to locate the owner. I was told that the owner of this bird will be difficult to locate.
One odd aspect of this pigeon's journey is that I found two staples in his shoulder!
I was looking at the band yesterday afternoon, when I felt something sharp in his front right breast. I thought maybe it was the end of a broken off feather. I looked closely, and could see a piece of metal sticking out. I just pulled it out, and it was a staple. It was like a 3/8 inch staple you would shoot from a staple gun. It was mostly straightened out. It was slightly over one inch long. One-eighth of an inch of this staple stuck out, and the rest was buried in the poor bird's chest.
I felt something else sharp there, and saw a second staple! I pulled this staple out also.
The wound had a scab on it. There was no bleeding. It didn't seem to bother the bird to have two staples removed from its chest.
These staples must have gone into the muscles between the skin and the lungs. Had they gone into the lungs it certainly would have killed the bird.
I asked Tony the pigeon guy what the hell the deal was with staples in a pigeon. He said he had never heard of it, although he did get one of his pigeons back one day, and it had a dart from a blow gun imbedded in its chest. Tony simply pulled out the dart and that pigeon healed up just fine.
Tony and I figured that there may have been a barn where there had been some felt paper stapled on. Maybe the paper had blown off, and a couple staples got straightened out, and were barely sticking into the wood. The bird flew into the barn and banged into those staples, and they stuck into the bird's chest.
That is a pretty tough bird that can fly around the North Carolina mountains with two staples sticking in his chest.0 -
I have had rollers in the past. My brother has a bunch now. Really good one have actually rolled all the way to the ground and killed themselves. 0 -
trap shooting anyone ? Use real pigeons instead of clay. 0
