Hire me to be your War Csar ?
Without debating if the war was justified, or if we should be there or not, we are in a fight, and if you fight, do it to win.
I'd be glad to take the job, AND be the scapegoat under a few conditions. The main one would be to leave me alone, and let me get it done. Second, give me clear goals on what you intend to accomplish (i.e remove Saddam, establish Democracy etc.).
Then I would go to the military and tell them to do it. Our military KNOWS how to win wars, they just haven't been allowed to.
If someone is shooting at you FROM a Mosque, flatten it.
If someone shooting at you runs IN to a mosque, flatten it.
The same for any other building. After the first couple of times, as soon as the bad guys run into a mosque after firing on our troops, the legitimate peace-loving muslims (yes, I really typed that) will toss his ass right back out BEFORE their building gets flattened.
Quit rebuilding their power, water and other utilities until AFTER the people who are directing hostilities totally and unconditionally surrender.
Choke off all the supply lines, including humanitarian supplies, until the ability and will of the people to support the fighters is crushed. You can't hide arms and ammunition under medical supplies, if there are no medical supplies.
The US had no qualms about killing hundreds of thousands, if not millions of civilians in WWII. Why is it so much different now ?
I'm not talking about specific TARGETING of civilians. Any soldier who wantonly and recklessly killed unarmed non-combatants would be held accountable for their actions. I'm just not against it when they are collateral damage when accomplishing the elimination of a military target.
After the war is over, and the damage calculated, and the public realizes how many civilians were killed, I will step up, and proudly submit my resignation. The President will accept it, and I'll be a political pariah. The troops will be home, and not in harms way. Seriously, this job would be one I'd be glad to take.

Not a bad proposal but for one small problem: this war is not military in nature. It never was.
As such, I don't think our military can win it on their own - this is not meant to slander or denigrate our armed forces, but just as you do not hire a doctor to fix your roof, neither do you call in the Marines to solve what is essentially a socio- and geopolitical problem.0 -

I agree totally. Plus, there seems to be no clear goal other than the broad "establish a democracy" without providing the specific objectives to accomplish it.
I do think that if the objectives were clear and not ambiguous as they seem to be that our forces could accomplish them, provided that they fell under the realm of military ability.
Military forces should not be used to "win the hearts and minds". That just simply isn't their purpose. Those things belong to the State Department. The military should be used for instilling both fear and respect, both of which ours has the capability of doing extremely well.0
