Odd pets(pics)Still testing

The squirrels name is Itchy, We rescued him and his brother(scratchy) when hurricane rita came through. Scratchy got sick, So we gave him to a vet to nurse back to health. They wont let you keep them here due to rabies. We nursed them every 4 hours since we got them at about 2 to 3 weeks. We took turns taking them to work(what a pain in the azz that was)every other day. We finally released Itchy into the wild behind my house about 2 springs ago. He got really mean and started biting. He slept on top of the kitchen cabinets at night, And in the morning i woke him up, Played with him a little an in the cage he went untill we got off.It was a good experience all in all,But I probley wouldent do it again.

Super cute!!! I have delt with kittens that lost their mom. Any young critter you become "mom" to is going to be different. I wonder how the squirrels do when raised by people? The kittens we raised ONE out of four made it and he was funny. Bear would get in the shower and walk around with you. 0 -
Not to be a downer, but it's actually illegal to keep squirrels as pets in most states. They're classified as game animals, meaning they can't be held in captivity without a permit.
That said, lots of people do this. From what I've seen they tend to get a bit cranky as they age.0 -
uuuggghhh,permit?OH,YEAH,yeah,I got a permit[:D] 0 -
I don't know what to do with this guy, he's destroying my back yard.

We had one of these while growing up. Cosmo the Sugar Glider.
He was super cool. He'd eat some peanuts, then jump on dad's beer can and lick the beer from the ring of the can.

My neighibor had pet squirrels when I was growing up. One of the males almost took his finger off once it became mature. The neighibor told me once they get the urge to make little tree rats they get mean. 0 -
When I was in the 3rd grade we lived in South Louisiana. A neighbor friend and I used to build box traps and catch flying squirrels and keep them for a while as pets. They would sleep curled up in our shirt pockets. Things went well until one night when I was laying on the couch the one I had at that time ventured out of my pocket; climbed up to my shoulder and the next thing I knew he had bitten my left ear lobe and this was way before guys piercing their ears was stylish. Yikes that hurt and also ended my desire to have pet flying squirrels. However, they were neat little critters. 0 -
The place I work is a zoo, so I tend to have pretty conventional pets. Now. 0 -

Shucks, anybody can love warm, fuzzy, four legged critters [:)]

Can you love a cold blooded killer and eater of warm fuzzy critters? (Wellll, don't be looking in any mirrors, then [8D])
We got them all over out here. Although I have not seen one this year yet.
They look real inpressive when they rear up and kinda flaten thier neck out (a flare simular to a cobra but not as wide).0 -
I don't think of squirrels as "odd pets". I had several of them when I was a youngster. I didn't let the lack of a "permit" bother me too much. The only one I had that was really mean was a Fox Squirrel that was almost half grown when I got him. He would tear you fingers up pretty good, but he didn't do any permanent damage. [:D] 0 -
I got a coupel of pics where he tore me up .Ill try posting them when I get home. Do those black rat snakes have white mouths like a cotton mouth? 0 -

And this was him playing,He got mean after that.0 -
Hey Matwor, Elaphe oblsoleta is correct, but there are no longer any recognized subspecies. All have been elevated to specific status. See the Center for North American Herpetology common and scientific names section. 0 -

Yes, but the rat snake has round pupils and the cottonmouth will have eliptical pupils, (cat-eyes), not that any of you guys are gonna get close enough to find out. The rat snake will be longer and more slender, and the cottonmouth will have more of a distinct pattern on its back.
Shoot, I catch black rats when I'm drivin' down the road and let them go in my back yard.
To anybody that kills a snake in their yard, I always ask, "So, you must like mice then?"[;)][:D]0 -

Thanks Dale, I was not aware of that.
It appears they don't even call them "Black Rat Snakes" anymore either.[V][:(] Check out this link.
