M-1 Garand

In my life, I have seen people hunt with a lot of different firearms, 303 British, sporterized 03's and 17's. I have never seen or heard of anyone using a M-1. I have seen 30 cal. carbines but not grown up M-1s. I know they are not intended as sporting rifles but I know you all have seen unusual firearms on trips, what about the Garand? I don't know if I spelled correctly, please excuse mis-spells.

    Something is wrong with this whole deal. The spot weld will only stop you from removing the gas port unit. Looking close you can see the gas cut off is turned off. Someone check with Mark but I think there is nothing a little touch up or replacing a few parts on this rifle couldn't fix.

    I've decided that my collection won't be complete until I have a M-1 Garand. I don't want one that so perfect that I would feel guilty shooting it but don't want a hunk of junk either. I want one that looks good and shoots straight. What should I be looking for in a historically accurate(to a point) Garand. I've heard some terms tossed around like wielded, what's that? What prices are these fetching these days.

    Springfield has a comemorative(sp?) Iwo Jima M1 right now. I too would really like to have one of those for a hunting rifle. I think I may have to wait though.[:D]

    You can learn about the different grades of M1 and what's available at this time.

    That will help you in purchasing a Garand wherever you may find one. There are usually several available on Gunbroker.com.

    Buying one directly from CMP requires several steps that you can read about on that site.

    Just buy a clean, medium priced , good looking , low mileage garand. I lucked across this one off of Gunbroker. It's valuation is a little more since it is Pre War than a regular garand but just find yourself one that is not beat up and presentable. You should find one with that description for $600-$1000. This is a Winchester October 1941. Parts do not all match Winchester on this gun but the majority do. A total match gun will bring a lot more money. I do shoot this gun every once in a while but will not live long enough to see it wore out.

    Seriously, I have been thinking someday where all my guns will go.

    My two sons have not come around since for 20 months. Some kind of we are too busy syndrome. I am fixing to do a will and will exclude them completely from my estate. My wife does not like guns so the guns will just probably be sold. My hunting buddy gets my real toys so the government doesn't.

    This is my M1 Garand that I bought here at GB. I gave $1200 for it because it is all IHC. It has a replacement stock on it, but I got the original stock on the deal also. I passed this gun on to my brother who is a nut for just about anything IH. He never realized IHC made rifles until he saw this one, and then I could see him start to drool. We grew up using IH on the farm, and he, (my brother) work for IH at dealerships for over 25 years, so I think you all can see the reason for the purchase of this rifle. [:)]

    thats a fine looking M1

    several years ago my logal Gander Mountain had a IH on the used rack for under 500 , like a dumb ass i didn't buy it the first night it was there , when i went back it was long gone

    By the way, that bayonet was pulled out of war stock and issued to a Ready Reservist who was put on active duty for Desert Storm. I saw that and swapped it out with a extra bayonet that I had, before the reservist turned in her equipment. Funny how that stuff gets mixed with newer equipment.

    M1 supplies are beginning to dry up and prices are going up too, but the pawn shop selling that rifle that frogbert showed as an example is way overpriced in my opinion. I bought from from cmp in late 2004 that was in better condition than that example and it cost me $450.00 with a bore of 1.5 and a muzzle of 1.0 on the gages, no gouges or cracks at all. It was also all WWII parts including the barrel(SA 1945). According to the example shown I should sell it with a starting price of at least $1000.00-right. His reserve is not met at $750.00, almost double what he paid for it at cmp(where I am assuming he bought his M1 and 03's that he has for sale). I don't plan on selling mine but I really do not like seeing these old rifles being bought by people who are just going to turn around and try to make an obscene profit on them and thereby forcing the price up. I don't really have a good idea on to control this situation nor would I want to stop someone from selling their rifle. What concerns me is that when the young people get dis-interested in guns because they can't afford them, the days of ownership of firearms are numbered in this country.
