serial# check

I am looking to purchase a used gun, how can I check the serial number to make sure it's not stolen? Have seen a few I would like at flea markets gun shows etc, and just want to make sure everything is by the book, thanks for any imput.

  Where I'm from, the cops will check it for you. If its stolen, be ready to produce the person who sold it to you or your going down
