Wolf Ammo
I have heard rumor that the lacquer-coated wolf ammo tends to clog the chambers of AR-15 style rifles. Apparently sustained fire causes the lacquer to melt off of the casings and fill the chamber creating a "goo" substance when the rifle cools. Ultimately (so I've heard), this causes feeding and extractions problems. Has anyone had this experience? Would the new copper-coated steel casings manufactured by Wolf cause similar problems?I just ordered a case of Wolf ammo and am wondering if I should cancel the order.

Do any of you use the Wolf ammo in 223/5.56? Lake City is hard to get right now, but Wolf seems available most everywhere.

Is it any safer to run Wolf through an AR since the change to a polymer coating instead of the lacquer coating? On AR15.com, most of the posters seem to have a favorable opinion of the polymer coated ammo being run through an AR. I thought I'd get input from you guys.

A coworker is picking up a Mini 30 this weekend and asked about using Wolf ammo in it.

what is the consensus on wolf ammo
I have shot 200 rds of wolf 45 ammo in my 1911a1 and can see no dammage from the steel case which is what the guy at the range said was the major problem.
I like the way it shoots and it looks like it would store well but would like to hear what others think before I buy 8 or 9 hundred rounds more

I have bought hundreds of ammo made by Wolf in 7.62x39. It fired and fed just fine so I thought I would try some in .223 for my AR-15. After about 3 magazines full it started to jam and would not eject for anything. It did this in both my duty AR and my heavy barrel varmit AR. After running a brush through it, things returned to normal.
I figure that this coating that is put on the steel cases builds up and eventually coats the chamber till malfunctions occur because of the tighter chamber tolerances. So much for the good prices on this ammo. I shoot it for targets and plinking anyway so I guess when I finish the case of ammo, I will go with brass cased ammo from now on.0 -
Since I am relativly new here, I'm sure this has probably been hashed
over before, But my question is about wolf ammo. I have been told
by a number of people and also read on some companies info. page
not to use steel cased ammo. Also the lacquer on the case melts
when the chamber gets hot and sticks to the inside of the chamber.
when it cools it's a bear to get out and causes malfuntions due to
the smaller chamber tolerances. Anybody have any problems with wolf?
I won't shoot it in my firearms. Does anybody use it?

I shoot wolf in most calibers but If I remember right the Ruger is very picky on ammo. 0 -
UUUmmm you might check on this one. I know there are 2 different versions of 7.62x39. If I remember right the Mini 30 uses a .308 bbl. The imported 7.62 is usually .311 in diameter. I would seek more info. 0 -
As far as Wolf ammo - if you shoot A LOT, then it is the way to go. Yea it is dirty and you might get a jam or two, so what, Its way less $ than brass.
Me and my buds have shot over 100,000 rounds of Wolf over the last 2-3 years.
Bring a cleaning kit so if it starts to jam up a lot, you can clean the action and run a few patches down the bore.

I knew there was a difference in 7.62 NATO and 308 winchester, but I never heard of 2 kinds of 7.62x39s
BTW, I use wolf ammo in all my guns except for my new savage model 10. It's dirty, but cheap.0 -

I have not researched this as it is not something I needed to know. For most part the .308/7.62 are interchangeable.
Here in the US most 7.62 bullets use a diameter of .308, the euro country 7.62 usually use a .311 diameter bullet.
Now here is the part I am not sure on, I am pretty sure it is not safe to shot .311 bullets in a bbl that is only .308. From what I understand the Mini 30's use a .308 diameter bbl.0 -
NWcid...that is news to me on the different 7.62x39. As far as I knew they were all the same. 308 is normally classed as 7.62x51 (IIRC).
I would think that if Ruger marked a barrel 7.62x39 and it was barreled in 308 caliber they would have a crap load of law suits over this. It would be like marking one as 223 but actually chambering it in 2220 -
IIRC, the Mini-30 barrels ARE .308; however, if you shoot the traditional, cheap Wolf/eastern euro ammo, don't worry. The 3/1000's of an inch will just swage down a bit; accuracy will suffer, but you won't.
And, I've got a buddy who's put 1000's of rounds of the cheap euro ammo thru his Mini30, never a problem.0 -

Wolf works well in my Mini 30. I shoot the 122 hp out of mine. The 154 soft point is for deer. At 100 yd. it will shoot the end out of a pepsi can. 0 -

Which .308 diameter bullets make a 7.62x51? .308 bullets are used for all these and more .30-30, .300 Savage, .308, .30-06, .300 (all makes). I am talking about the projectile being .308" in diameter. All of those and more use the same size bullet, but are not chambered for the same round.
European counties use a .311" diameter bullet. This is the case on at least the .303, 7.62x39, and 7.62x54r.

Nowhere did I say that 7.62x39mm ammo was .308 Cal (aka 7.62x51mm), I said .308 diameter . Nowhere did I say to use or try to use 308 Cal (aka 7.62x51mm) in a gun chambered for 7.62x39mm.
What I am saying is that SOME of the Mini 30's had .308 diameter bores in them. This is smaller (very slightly) then the .311 diameter bullet for the European bullets. If I understand correctly the 7.62x39 put out by US companies do use .308 bullets.
My point is to check and see what diameter the bbl is. I don't have all the facts about this as I do not own one. Hopefully someone with all of the facts can chime in, but I do remember reading that this was a problem.0 -

Sadly around me the wolf is no longer cheaper.... it is now the same price as the remington UMC .223 ammo. 6.99 a box. Thankfully I reload. Now for 7.62x39 the wolf is still cheaper, but not near as much as it used to be. 0 -

Can you substantiate this? (i.e. .308" projectiles used in 7.62x39 ammo).
I'd be happy to sue the poop out of any company that did this, without putting a giant CAUTION on the box.
yes, it's "just" 3/1000 of an inch, but you are not buying it to be 3/1000th off.
Plus, I believe SAAMI has a reference load for this round which requires a 0.311" projectile.0 -
NW I used those terms as an example. I knew you were not advocating loading 308 (7.62x51) in a 7.92x39. Hell we are all smarter than that...I hope [:D]
However it does seem odd to me that any firearm manufacturer would put out a rifle chambered in 7.62x39 (with a projectile diameter of .311) with a barrel bored to only .308. That would be asking for a disaster as you could have a failure of the barrel or chamber because of the mismatch.
I thought (and we all know thinking can get us in trouble) that all 7.62x39 would be loaded to the same projectile specs.0 -
You need to buy it in bulk......1000 round cases sell for around $180 - $220 0
