Model 1880 U.S. Trapdoor with Sliding Combination Ramrod-Bayonet. Your breechblock is appropriately marked US Model 1873 for this gun.

If all original it is a pretty rare gun with about 1001 made for trial by government troops according to my reference and yours is in the correct serial number range (154,000 - 158,000).

Know tell us what it cost you. You probably stand to make a profit however I do not know how anyone could part with such a nice rifle.

Yep - nice one - I have one in almost mint condition. Springfield used to use all parts onhand
until they'd run out of the older ones.

What really fascinates me is the large number that were set aside for secondary military longarms while the Krags were being developed and utilised. Many of the old trapdoors were never issued but held in reserve for storage and training purposes. Years ago a local high school found a crate of excellent trapdoors that had been stored since before the First World War!

Yep, and as far as I can tell, it's all original. I've read a couple of different references that differ how many were actually made, but Flaydermans lists at 1001.

I picked it up for $2200, but don't plan on parting with it anytime soon.
