I would do a little dance, but Cal Tech tells me I have to notify them beforehand, so they don't send out press releases on the Richter reading on my dance....

another gave me a "Handi-gun" - single shot pistol grip .410,

I would make damm sure your "Handi-gun" has a barrel at least 18" long, or you will be celebrating your good fortune in jail. With your cell mate Sugar Buger Bubba.

Roger that - $250,000 fine and 10 years in Club Fed if it has a short barrel. Maybe that's why your friend gave it away!

I'm in the process of thinning mine out. There will be some on the auction soon, right now I'm selling a few locally. I just don't use them anymore, I'm getting older and I need to begin thinking of my reclining years.

I will let you all know when I start letting them go to the auction. I have a few nice collectors and LOTS of hunters..

Only gun I 'own' is one given to me by BDJ. It is in a safehouse in Virginia awaiting my arrival to permanent residency.

Lest you folks think I am a "baddie", I thought I would tell you that the H&R Handy Gun that my friend gave me is specifically exempted from the NFA "Short Barrelled Shotgun" category. It can be found on page 8 of Chapter 2: Definitions, along with a picture of the exact model. You had me really sweating for a few hours!!

It was never made as a "Shotgun" according to their own definitions, so it is not a "converted" Shotgun. Sure fooled me!! I don't even have to have a C&R license, the way I read the regs.

Come to think of it, that is how the "Judge" from Taurus must fall also - it was made as a Pistol. Does the Taurus have rifling? That would also exempt it from the NFA "Short Barrelled Shotgun" category.

Barrel is 12.125 inches, choke is marked "12MM"...is a single-shot, Break-Action, .410 (smoothbore) Pistol. Guess it was last made near the end of WWII. The one I have is lightly freckled with rust, but not too bad. Works fine.

    You're misreading those definitions http://www.atf.gov/firearms/nfa/nfa_handbook/chapter2.pdf

"While the above weapons are similar in appearance to weapons made from shotguns, they were originally manufactured in the illustrated configuration and are not modified from existing shotguns. As a result, these weapons do not fit within the definition of shotgun12 or weapons made from a shotgun13. The "any other weapon" definition also includes specifically described weapons with combination
shotgun and rifle barrels 12 inches or more but less than 18 inches in length from which only a single discharge can be made from either barrel without manual reloading."

The "Handy-gun" does not come under the "shotgun" category since it was originally manufactured with a short-barrel, thus was not modified. It DOES, however, come under the category of "any other weapon" (included with cane guns, umbrella guns, pen guns, etc.) manufactured with a smoothbore and a short barrel. It IS subject to NFA regulations and is NOT exempt unless relined with a rifled barrel and specifically reclassified (by serial number) as exempt from NFA regulations by ATF. You may wish to contact an attorney familiar with ATF regulations or take the barrel on a deep-sea fishing trip.

Gun no longer exists - took a grinder to the barrel/chamber, then lost the rest.

"Friends keep giving me guns...." What a GREAT way to get rid of the evidence!!! Gotta remember that one...[:p]

Re the Taurus Judge, I think someone posted here that is has extremely shallow rifling, so technically it is not smooth bore.
