2nd Amendment and Kids - WOW
I was really surprised this morning when I read the paper. I don't normally read this section, it just fell out, and it caught my eye. It is the children's section that's supposed to educate kids on some fairly basic stuff.
Today's topic? The Second and Third Amendments. I was sure it was going to be an indoctrination piece teaching kids how stupid we gun owners are. Honestly, it is about as pro-2nd Amendment as it could be with their level of understanding. I don't like EVERYTHING that it says, (such as the third paragraph), but I also can't deny its truth.

Background on Gun Ownership
The right to own and carry guns had been an English tradition for hundreds of years.
At the time of the American revolution, most men had guns.
However, some form of gun control is also a tradition.
There were usually some laws about who was permitted to own them.
During the Revolutionary War, some Colonies had laws that women, free blacks and members of certain religions could not own guns.
About Militias
In Colonial times, many able-bodied men between the ages of 15 to 60 served in their state's "militias," or military units. Some were soldiers, but many were farmers. Their duty was to defend their community.
During the Revolutionary War, state militias joined in the fight for freedom.
The fighters for our freedom know that their right to own weapons, and assemble, train and equip an army, enabled them to win the war.
After the war, the Second Amendment was adopted to prevent the U.S. government from taking away that right.
The American Colonists would not have won the Revolutionary War if they had not had the right to carry guns. (emphasis mine)

In this country, there is a debate about how we should control guns and who should be permitted to own them.
Some people want the U.S. government to control gun ownership.
Other people want little or no government control.
Both sides often point to the Second Amendment because they think it supports their argument.
How people feel about guns is usually based on their own experience.
Some people have had negative experiences with guns. They might want strong gun control laws.
Other people have had positive experiences with guns. They might want little or no control.
The U.S. government has not stopped state and local governments form setting up their own gun ownership laws.
Each state and local area has its own gun control laws.

Denver Newspaper Agency, so that would be the Denver Post (liberal rag) and the Rocky Mountain News (moderate).0 -

LOL you may be right. But, to be fair, the Rocky is my publisher, and they print a few of my pro-2nd articles, surprisingly enough. Not as many as I'd like, but a few. Most of the stuff they print from me are my restaurant and movie reviews.0 -

Do you have the ability to scan the original article and E-mail it to me? I have a hundred buddies that are going to want to see this.0 -
I saw that section, too. It's the kids' pullout section called The Mini-Page. This is a piece that goes into dozens of dailies across the country on a regular basis (syndicated by Universal Press Syndicate weekly, I think), so most editors wouldn't have much choice but to use it unless they chose to scrap it for the week; they'd still have to pay for it, though. I, too, expected it to come across as much more anti-gun than it did. It provides a fairly balanced look at the Second Amendment (and the Third). I was glad to see it.[:)] 0 -
I should have added that I saw it in a Minnesota daily paper, not the Denver daily. The MiniPage should show up this week, if it hasn't already, in various dailies all across the country.[:D] 0 -

Do you have the ability to scan the original article and E-mail it to me? I have a hundred buddies that are going to want to see this.
My scanner isn't that big, so unfortunately, no. This is full-page stuff we're talking about. I'd have to fold it up into little pieces, it would take away from too much of it. However, apparently, this is circulated around the country, so perhaps it is in your local paper?0 -

I picked it up, saw what it was, and said to my wife, "Dammit, here they go indoctrinating kids again." My wife says, "What?" and after I read it, I say, "Um, never mind! They got it right!"
Then, she really wanted to see it, because she didn't believe me.0 -
