They should be. I've used them alot and never had any come loose. If you not sure, you could always drill and retap.

Lowes should have them, any hardware store should too.

Yes they will hold. You will need the Helicoil, a special tap for the helicoil, and an installation tool. Rather than spend the money for a one time job, you may want to see what a local machine shop that already has the equipment will charge. You could make an installation tool using a screw if you wanted to. The key thing is to be sure you order the correct length Helicoil insert. You don't want any of it sticking out above the hole.

We used to helicoil any threads we wanted to be extra strong - vibration and heavy hits were much better absorbed by the helicoil holes than the raw metal ones. Helicoil holes/threads are stronger than the native ones.

Often times, threaded inserts or helicoils are installed in aluminum pieces simply because they are stronger than the base metal, unless corrosion is a concern, than you can have some dissimilar metal corrosion, which can weaken the anchoring of the helicoil. However in most cases they are plenty strong and durable. I work in the aviation industry and helicoils are used widespread on turbine engines where aluminum and magnesium are present. For your application, will work great.[:D][:D]
