Tragedy in Wyoming

An aquaintance who drove for FED X was out last Saturday doing his deliveries. It was blizzard conditions here in Wyoming that day. The driver was up on the Crow Reservation and stopped to put chains on his tires. He suffered a massive heart attack and died by the side of his truck. He was so far off the regularly traveled roads that he was not found until about 9 hours later. The guy was only 46 years old. Very sad.

    It is a sad story.
    But, the man lived well into middle age. He had the chance to find a love, to have or not have a family, to choose a career. He must have been fairly healthy other than the heart problem. It is possible that he never even knew that he had a heart condition.
    It always breaks my heart when a child dies. But when a middle aged adult dies like this, at least he had the chance to live a life.
    This manner of death is far better than getting cancer and slowly rotting away over several years.

    Fed-ex does not have GPS on them like UPS does. Infact most of the trucks for fed-ex are independent contractors or work for a contractor. This is true of all fed-ex divissions except for fed-ex freight.

    I know this for a fact as I used to drive for one of their contractors. And at one point was even considering buying a truck and putting it on with fed-ex.

    I am not trying to comfort his family. His family is inconsolable.
    I am making an accurate observation on life and death.

    We dont have any tracking system in place. The only way FedEx would miss me is if I didnt show up for work the next day. Knowing fedEx, they were more concerned about his cargo being stolen than his life. Sad story.

    I used to spend some time on the reservations. Depending on where you are, there are some serious "back roads" on the reservations I've visited. I liked learning them on my motorcycle in the summertime. I'm sorry to hear about the loss.

    That's not only tragic but also a terrible way to die, all alone in a storm. And he's way too young. My condolences to his family and friends.

    dano: the express guys, being company employees and not contractors like the rest of us, are kept on a short leash. I work for ground, we are only connected to express/overnight on a corporate level, if that makes sense.
