    A few years ago I spoke with Homer Powley over the phone. I was asking him some questions about his pressure slide rule calculator. I asked him about detonation, he said in all his years in the field he had never been able to duplicate it. He said they'd tryed some wild combinations trying to duplicate it in the lab and were never successful. He told me that while he couldn't disprove detonation, he was rather skeptical of it. Dave

    [:0][:0] Man, I dont know if the guy was shooting reloads...or what the problem was; but that there...is why I dont reload.
    After I crunched my head several years ago, I just dont trust myself to pay enough attention anymore to reload.
    I shoot a lot of reloads from a family I know that have all, reloaded for years, I trust them, dont trust myself...[:D]

    I'm unconvinced by Poweley's comments even though I believe his computer and ballistics charts.
    The phenomenon is supposed to have occured with smaller charges of slow powder in overbore cases.
    If memory serves me there were past instances in the 25-06 and maybe a Whalen cartridge.
    Dynamite and TNT can either burn or detonate under different conditions with vastly different rates of burning.
    Also note in some loading tables the cautionary note: "This load is not to be reduced".

    T/Cs have an investment cast frame. That is not nearly as strong as forging.

    That's the biggest reason that I don't like Rugers.

    He burst both ear drums and had to have stitches and some shrapnel removed from his finger. He also had blood coming out of both ears.The barrel was clean. Don't know exactly what went wrong. Doctor said his ear drums would heal...

    No, investment castings aren't as good as a forging of the same size
    but the barrel split and the frame fragmented.
    I've tested barrels up to about 75kpsi CUP without a hint of failure.

    Yes detontions do occur An undersise powder charge detonate all at once before the bullet has time to leave the case. So instead of pushing up the barrel it goes out and blooy

    I'm curious, was the projectile found? Checking (micro) the diameter of the projectile COULD provide a clue. Boy, it sure LOOKS like it could've been an obstructed barrel

    Not much salvagable on these guns.

    In the first case it was a 25 STW which is based off of the 8mm MAG necked down to 25 Cal.
    It sounds like too light of a load OR in the odd case where a barrel is rechambered to a larger case diameter and leaves WAY too thin metal between the case and the bottom of the threads for the scope mount. I know of one case where only .012" was left when a chamber was made for the new chamber case was larger in diameter than the original. Way too thin. If shot barrel bulges or in the worst case the barrel splits and looks like the above photos.
    If you are going to have a factory barrel rechambered make sure that the threads are not too deep then leaving too little metal in those areas.
    By the way most custom shops will not chamber the WSM or WSSM cases in the Encore because they cause too much back pressure and can damage the frame.

    I never had the nadz to try hand loading after I saw pics like this....
    This guy should spend a little time on his knees in thanksgiving for sure....
