If you double a penny every day, how long before you reach a million dollars?
This has been a math puzzle used to perplex people with the result. Answer? 27 days to reach a million dollars - Or doubling your penny 27 times. Just search yahoo or google for the phrase double penny million or something similar, and you will see a LOT of results about people discussing this issue. This math puzzle has been discussed over and over many times in many math classes and puzzle forums as a fantasy of making a million out of one cent. Possible? That's what were here to find out!
Don't believe that it only takes a single penny doubled 27 times to reach a million dollars? Lets do the math.
Don't believe the math behind it?
1: 0.01 x 2 = 0.02
2: 0.02 x 2 = 0.04
3: 0.04 x 2 = 0.08
4: 0.08 x 2 = 0.16
5: 0.16 x 2 = 0.32
32 cents after doubling a penny 5 times? Doesn't seem too impressive really...
6: 0.32 x 2 = 0.64
7: 0.64 x 2 = 1.28
8: 1.28 x 2 = 2.56
9: 2.56 x 2 = 5.12
10: 5.12 x 2 = 10.24
10 dollars? After 10 times? Enough for a good meal I guess..
11: 10.24 x 2 = 20.48
12: 20.48 x 2 = 40.96
13: 40.96 x 2 = 81.92
14: 81.92 x 2 = 163.84
15: 163.84 x 2 = 327.68
16: 327.68 x 2 = 655.36
17: 655.36 x 2 = 1,310.72
18: 1,310.72 x 2 = 2,621.44
19: 2,621.44 x 2 = 5,242.88

Now we're getting somewhere... $10,000 after 20 trades.. But still nowhere near a million... So...

23: 41,943.04 x 2 = 83,886.08
24: 83,886.08 x 2 = 167,772.16
25: 167,772.16 x 2 = 335,544.32
26: 335,544.32 x 2 = 671,088.64
27: 671,772.16 x 2 = 1,342,177.28
And there it is! $1.34 million to be exact.

This deception was used to bankrupt a King long ago.
A worker offered 30 days labor to a King for the price of 1 penny a day and double it every day for 30 days(not just 27). The King agreed thus after 30 was bankrupt and the worker a millionair.
