Independent voters tilt toward Democrats
WASHINGTON - Michael Brooks is exactly the kind of voter the Republican Party can ill afford to lose. But in a foreboding omen for 2008, it may have already done just that.
The auto parts store worker from St. Charles, Mo., says he used to be a Republican but felt abandoned and is now an independent.
"For some reason or other, they didn't seem to be for the masses anymore," said Brooks, 59, citing a lack of help for middle-income earners. He said he voted for George W. Bush in 2000, thinking the Republican was "more middle of the road, for the people. Obviously I was incorrect."
Brooks is not alone. From coast to coast, independent voters tilt tellingly toward Democrats in their opposition to the Iraq war, their displeasure with Bush and their feeling that the country is moving in the wrong direction, according to data from recent Associated Press-Ipsos polls.
That could be decisive in next year's contests for the White House and Congress, starting with the crucial early presidential primaries in New Hampshire.
The portion of that state's registered voters not enrolled in a political party has grown to 44 percent. While people can vote in either major party's primary, more are expected to choose the Democratic contest. That potentially would boost antiestablishment candidate Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., while leaving the GOP race more in the hands of the party's traditional conservative voters.
National exit polls show that after leaning toward Republicans by 48 percent to 45 percent as recently as the 2002 elections, independents began shifting toward Democrats.
"This is a serious problem" for Republicans, says GOP pollster Neil Newhouse. "We didn't get where we are among independents overnight. The data does suggest that it's going to take us some time to earn those votes back."

What exactly would you like the gub'ment to do? Lower Taxes? Won't happen under a democrat. Free {gub'ment} healthcare? hope he never gets sick.......This guy was never a TRUE Republican as if any politican has the guts to be one nowadays anyway {along the lines of Ron Paul and the now indy Pat Buchannan} just another sheeple looking for his handout.0 -

I like mine steamed,with lots of spices first, with shallow slits in the skin (careful not to go too deep, and hit the meat). Then, you let it cool, cut it up, and fry it..MMmmmmm good!![^]

I am not surprised to read this article.
Bush's Iraq War policy is singlehandedly responsible for the astonishing Republican loss of both houses in '06. Even with a bunch of inept doofuses, like Pelosi and Reed, the Dems still won.
As Bush continues to "Stay the Course" in Iraq, he will cause the destruction of the Republican party in '08. The vast majority of Americans are sick of the war.0 -
doesn't sound good, I heard the other day that Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose. Which is what it will take for men to wake-up. For now they have much to lose and many distractions.
I think a lot of the young folks want us out of Iraq since it's the PC thing to say, not realizing we are still in Germany, Korea, England etc etc... I really wish we hadn't pulled out of the Philipines in the mid 90's (I said this at the time also) cause now we are heading back...0 -
Yeah, the wishy washy middle of the roaders with no idea about anything will sway this way and athat, until they come up against having to vote for BILLARY, then the stench will overcome them, and they will either waste their vote on a nobody, or come over to the Republican side...
Since the Dems have staked out a Lose/Lose policy on Iraq, they will LOSE! Stick a fork in 'em.0 -

This concerns me at the national level....
As far as Guns are concerns Save for the Cleveland Area in the dems in this atate are pretty much progun...So as far as that is concerned me are still cool... But as I have remined my buddies ...and now you... Guns and the war are just two of the issues, we must never lose focus the those others either!!! Easy to do when one or two are being hammered in the press....0
