I think this is basically because A.J. Foyt did not race in Nascar much. He wasn't an everyday driver of the series. Its my belief that if he was, he might be up there in wins with R. Petty. Foyt raced in USAC and thats what he stuck with.
According to Wiki, Foyt has only started 128 NASCAR races over the span of 30 years. NASCAR.com shows that in 1977 he started 6 races, with 3 top tens and an average starting spot of 4.1, thats pretty good if you ask me.0 -

Actually, I was referring to Petty's 8 wins I only recall 1 of them!!! I think every knew A.j.Foyt abilties I saw him race several times, often locally @ Eldora Speedway in Rossburg Oh. (Fyi My brother is Mayor there)... AS you may or may not know Tony Stewart now owns that track...Over the years many greats raced a Eldora A.J. was red hot there on that 1/2 mile dirt track and most tracks for that matter0
