Bye Bye to a 1911 Colt
I helped my neighbor build his house. While we were building the house, Tom's father passed away in Alabama. Tom inherited a Bronco and some other stuff.
When we finished the house, Tom said, in appreciation for my work, although he had paid me well, he would give me some of his father's stuff, as he knew I was interested in militaria.
Tom explained that his father had been an officer in the Army, and had fought all across Germany in WW2. He gave me two bayonets that his father had brought back. One is round, about 8 inches long, with a metal scabbard. The other is a dagger style bayonet with a metal scabbard, blade about 12 inches long. Both of these are pretty rusty.
He also gave me a Nazi ceremonial dagger, which unfortunately is also rusty. It has a wooden handle with the Nazi eagle and swastika on it. In the old German script, you can read "Alles Fur Deutschland" in big black letters on the blade. If this Nazi dagger was in good shape I imagine it would be worth some money.
I asked Tom, "Didn't your dad bring back his 1911 Colt?"
Tom replied that he did, indeed. He said that his sister inherited the pistol. Tom said his sister doesn't like guns, and she threw the Colt into the garbage. He said, had he inherited the pistol, he would have given it to me along with the other stuff. I nearly broke down and cried.
So in the city dump in Birmingham, Alabama, there rests a 1911 Colt.

That is just sad.
It wouldn't surprise me if the pistol was rusted up as well, hopefully, if found, no one will use it in a crime.
I'm glad all my children know my affection for firearms and even if they don't want them, realize their potential value ... and will "dispose" of them properly.0 -

My Grandpa (mom's dad) was a 1LT. in the 6th AD. He brought back all kinds of stuff and gave a lot of it away to friends and neighbors after he got back. He gave away a matched pair of flintlock duelling pistols, a German officer's sword, several nazi flags, parachutes, uniforms, ect. Mom said he thought it was no big deal. Luckily for me, he kept his Remington Rand 1911, a 1915 Luger, a P-38, an Ed. Kettner combo gun, and his medals and pictures. I have it all now. I just wished he'd kept all of it. 0 -
