Mighty convenient way of skewing things. "Let's ignore ALL the other deaths and say that GW Bush is doing better than everyone else!"

Or why not look at it this way: let's get rid of all non-war deaths for Carter, Clinton, Reagan, and Bush I, and see how ol' Intesinal Fortitude Bush stands up.

    stats can be twisted.
what isnt mentioned is the build up of military personnel. the number of deaths increases in purportion to an increase overall. and too, a lot of military were bailing out when clinton was prez. so, the numbers went down because of a smaller military. and too, that period began the practice of out-sourcing a lot of its jobs to sand crabs...aka: govt civilians. so death from govt civilians may show a spike wherever the military death shows reduction[;)]

    i loved stats in college.[^]

If we were to ONLY use combat deaths as a barometer for how well a president is doing, let us take a look:

    Jimmy Carter
    1980, Operation Eagle Claw: 8

    Ronald Reagan
    1983, Operation Urgent Fury: 19

    George HW Bush
    1989-1990, Operation Just Cause: 24

1991 Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm: 378 (grand total Coalition deaths)

    Bill Clinton
    1993, Operation Restore Hope: 18

    1995, Operation Deliberate Force: 0

    1999, Operation Allied Force: 0

Can this really mean that Carter, Reagan, Bush I, and Clinton lost fewer people than George W. Bush? What wars were they fighting? Come on! It's not like those were real wars, right?

Looks like our liberal media is just skewing the facts again! Why, you'd almost expect them to try to compare two different sets of data to try to make GW Bush look good, er, bad. I meant bad!

What this clearly indicates is that our media and our liberal politicians Bush supporters - those still stubborn and or blind enough to still call themselves that, pick and choose, and they tend to present only those facts that support their agenda-driven reporting.[}:)]

EMM - just curious, but why did you not include any stats for 1999 on ??

That would only be combat deaths, not including accidental deaths, of course.

I'm just looking for a fair picture.

again, w/o the big picture, stats can mislead.

Trying to justify soldier's deaths with statistics is pretty low. Even worse is trying to do it with bullsh|t statistics.

Some of the flaws in your 'statistics':

    A. Size of the military is not taken into account. Larger military = more personnel = more accidental deaths.
    B. Combat vs. non-combat deaths are not taken into account (except in 2003-04)
    C. The last two years with data have no information about non-combat deaths, and paint a misleading picture that deaths are going down instead of UP.

EMM...As long as we're getting the facts straight....

    You left out:
2 F-111 pilots shot down over Lybia on 14 April 1986 during Operation El Dorado Canyon

19 Airmen that died on 25 June 1998 in the Khobar Towers truck bombing during Operation Southern Watch

The world is littered with statistics, and the average person is bombarded with five statistics a day1. Statistics can be misleading and sometimes deliberately distorting. There are three kinds of commonly recognised untruths:

    Lies, damn lies and statistics.
    - Mark Twain

This quote from Mark Twain is accurate; statistics are often used to lie to the public because most people do not understand how statistics work. The aim of this entry is to acquaint the reader with the basics of statistical analysis and to help them determine when someone is trying to pull a fast one.

Think about how stupid the average person is; now realise half of them are dumber than that.
    - George Carlin

    Gentlemen:

One soldiers death is too many, no matter who is CINC.

That's not a realistic statement, just wish it could be true.

I love statistics, but I hate the term.

Definition 1: A statistic is any number that can be computed from a body of data.

Definition 2: Statistics is also a rigorous method of interpreting data.

A statistic under definition 1 can be very misleading, but might be entirely truthful.

Under definition 2, if you know the the pre-determined rate at which you are willing to accept an error (aka "alpha"), the statistic contains a lot of information...provided that the analysis was performed correctly. Basically, it provides an estimate of the number you're interested in and at the same time it tells you how likely you are to be right or wrong.

It's possible to mislead under definition 2, but only if you're inept or ill-intentioned.

That said, I couldn't make sense of any of the previous posts.

During Clinton's Bosnia was going on...all we could fly into Bosnia was C-130's due to the terrain, weather, and navigational capability at the airfield. The Secretary of Defense flew into Bosnia on a C-130.

Up comes this Congressmen Brown...special friend to the Clinton Cartel. The General in charge of Ramstein Air Base wants to fly the Congressman into Bosnia on a nice plane...not some prop job C-130 full of bullet holes (they were). The Colonels at Ramstein Air Base, Germany tell the General it is impossible to fly anything but a C-130 into Bosnia.....the General releives them of Command and sends American military members and a Congressmen on a nice fancy plane to get to Bosnia....(it'll help the General later for his political career). Plane crashes as the Colonel's said it would...everyone dies. President Clinton did the one thing that he did right when he was President...he relieved the General of Command.

A colonel took over Ramstein Air Base, Germany....the world's largest NATO/Air Base....don't think it's happened ever before in history. It was dead quiet there for a week.

What happened to the General?.....he got a desk job in the Pentagon of all places after that..retired shortly thereafter and died months after his retirement date.

Atleast our military hasn't killed a Congressmen recently.

Your stats aren't combat deaths, they are EVERYTHING deaths, like soldiers dying of illness, Accident, Homicide, Self Inflicted, Terrorist Attack, Unknow... If you look at hostile action fatalities GW is getting more soldiers killed than any president since 1980.

    Hostile Action Deaths

    End of Jimmy Carter's term
    1980 0
Ronald Reagan 20 Jan 1981 inauguration
    1981 0
    1982 0
    1983 18
    1984 1
    1985 0
    1986 2
    1987 37
    1988 0
    George H. W. Bush 20 Jan 1989 inauguration
    1989 23
    1990 0
    1991 147
    1992 0
    William J. Clinton 20 Jan 1993 inauguration
    1993 0
    1994 0
    1995 0
    1996 1
    1997 0
    1998 0
    1999 0
    2000 0
    George W. Bush 20 Jan 2001 inauguration
    2001 0
    2002 17
    2003 344
    2004 737

You can always twist the statistics in your favor, but you need to look at them all and look at the facts. Our current presidential administration is doing a poor job, and according to everything I've seen in the news, our military leaders do not support GW.

Feelings about war are the same, no matter what the time frame.

    From the Civil war:

Tenting Tonight on the Old Campground
    by Walter Kittredge

We're tenting tonight on the old camp ground,
Give us a song to cheer
Our weary hearts, a song of home,
And friend we love so dear.

    (Chorus)
Many are the hearts that are weary tonight,
    Wishing for the war to cease;
Many are the hearts that are looking for the right
To see the dawn of peace.
    Tenting tonight, tenting tonight,
Tenting on the old camp ground

We've been tenting tonight on the old camp ground,
    Thinking of days gone by,
Of the loved ones at home that gave us the hand
And the tear that said "Goodbye!"
    (Chorus)

We are tired of war on the old camp ground,
    Many are dead and gone,
Of the brave and true who've left their homes,
    Others been wounded long.
    (Chorus)

We've been fighting today on the old camp ground,
    Many are lying near;
Some are dead and some are dying,
    Many are in tears.

Many are the heart who are weary tonight,
    Wishing for the war to cease;
Many are the hearts that are looking for the right
To see the dawn of peace
    Dying tonight, dying tonight,
Dying on the old camp ground.

What is the rationale for starting in 1980, rather than 1880 or 1775 ??

Of course one could point out that the first 9 yrs of Viet Nam produced a US death toll of about 60% of the current Iraq war!!!

    1957 1
    1958 0
    1959 2
    1960 5
    1961 16
    1962 53
    1963 118
    1964 206
    1965 1,863

And we all know the result of the next few years that followed by playing pu$$yfoot with a deadly enemy with BTW is pretty much the same kind of crap that is infecting Iraq!!!
You simply can't beat a hornet's nest with a stick, if you ain't smart enough to kill them all then you are stupid enough to get you ass stung to death....
