Anyone from around Ft. Benning?
I'm gonna be out there in a couple weeks watching my son graduate from basic training. Was hoping someone would offer me some tips on some must see sights for my son and I to check out. I looked up a few but tough to figure out over the internet what museums and sights are overrated. Civil war history would be something we would be interested in. Thanks, Rob

really not much to do in columbus. 0 -
Andersonville is not too far for a trip to see the Civil War prisoner of war camp. It is also home to the national Prisoner of War Museum. Don 0 -
Infantry Museum at Ft Benning is well worth the stop. Visit the Ranger Walk right at Post Headquarters (as we used to call it, Bunker 4) There is a small museum in Columbus showing one of the ironclads that was raised from the Chatahochee River. 0 -
spent a total of about a year in columbus while training to modify itv's from TOW anti tank missiles to TOW 2 missle system also the guidance systems for the TOW2 missles in the 80's and early 90's also was in a hunting club close tp Pheonix City Al. a couple years ago. there was nothing to do except go to bars and stuff. unless it's been torn down the road leading to the main entrance there is a small hotel John Wayne, and other actors stayed while filming the Green Berets. i loved Columbus Ga. 0 -

I was at Ft. Benning for a couple of months early 80's for jump school, but didn't get to do much sightseeing, other than from the top of those 250 ft. towers in the center of the photo. [:)]
A google search will point you to Civil War battlefields in the area. A number of GB'ers have been down that way recently, hopefully they will have some good pointers for you.
same here...thank him for his service from my family!0 -
Thanks guys. Prisoner of War museum sounds interesting, gonna have to check it out. We are flying into Atlanta and driving to Ft Benning from there. Thanks for the well wishes. Wife and I are pretty proud of him. 0 -
Another Infantryman huh? Tell him Congrats and Thanks for serving for us. My son graduated from infantry school there in 2000. We went down to watch the ceremony, and it was one of the worst trips we ever had, because everyone got sick with a bad cold. Did go to the Infantry Museum on post and enjoyed that, but the rest of the time we spent in the motel room trying to get over the bug. 0 -
No; I've never even been there.
Happy to help!!0 -
If your driving from Atlanta to Columbus check out FDR's Little White House at Pine Mountain, the Little Grand Canyon just south of Columbus at Lumpkin and like mentioned before do not miss going to the infantry museum it is a absolute must. Tell your son congrats. 0
