OMAHA, Neb. - A man opened fire with a rifle at a busy department store Wednesday, killing eight people before taking his own life, in an attack that made holiday shoppers run screaming through a mall and barricade themselves in dressing rooms. Five more people were wounded, two critically.
The gunman left a suicide note that was found at his home by his mother, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak. TV station KETV reported that the note said he wanted to "go out in style."
The official identified the gunman as Robert A. Hawkins, age 19 or 20.
Witnesses said the gunman fired down on shoppers from a third-floor balcony of the Von Maur store. He was found dead on the third floor with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and his victims were discovered on the second and third floors, police said.
"My knees rocked. I didn't know what to do, so I just ran with everybody else," said Kevin Kleine, 29, who was shopping with her 4-year-old daughter at the Westroads Mall, in a prosperous neighborhood on the city's west side. She said she hid in a dressing room with four other shoppers and an employee.
Sgt. Teresa Negron said the gunman killed eight people, then apparently killed himself. Authorities gave no motive for the attack and said they did not know whether he said anything during the rampage.
Police received a 911 call from someone inside the mall, and shots could be heard in the background, Negron said. By the time officers arrived six minutes later, the shooting was over, she said.
"Everybody was scared, and we didn't know what was going on," said Belene Esaw-Kagbara, 31, a Von Maur employee. "We didn't know what to do. I was praying that God protect us."
Mickey Vickory, who worked at Von Maur's third-floor service department, said she heard shots at about 1:50 p.m.
She and her co-workers and customers went into a back closet behind the wrapping room to hide, then emerged about a half-hour later when police shouted to come out with their hands up. As police took them to another part of the mall for safety, they saw the victims.
"We saw the bodies and we saw the blood," she said.
Keith Fidler, another Von Maur employee, said he heard a burst of five to six shots followed by 15 to 20 more rounds. Fidler said he huddled in the corner of the men's clothing department with about a dozen other employees until police yelled to get out of the store.
A witness, Shawn Vidlak, said the shots sounded like a nail gun. At first he thought it was noise from construction work at the mall.
"People started screaming about gunshots," Vidlak said. "I grabbed my wife and kids we got out of there as fast as we could."
Shortly after the shooting, which came three weeks before Christmas, a group of shoppers came out of the building with their hands raised. Some were still holding shopping bags.
Police told people to park their cars at businesses across from the mall and to wait for their loved ones, then directed them to an Omaha hotel to await information.
President Bush was in Omaha on Wednesday for a fundraiser, but left about an hour before the shooting.
The Von Maur store is part of a 22-store Midwestern chain. The sprawling, three-level mall has more than 135 stores and restaurants. It gets 14.5 million visitors every year, according to its Web site.
It was the second mass shooting at a mall this year. In February, nine people were shot, five of them fatally, at Trolley Square mall in Salt Lake City. The gunman, 18-year-old Sulejman Talovic, was shot and killed by police.

An altercation in a store at the mall led to the gunfire, Shauntelle Hamrick, the manager of the Journeys shoe store, told CNN. Hamrick says she watched as a group of people "ganged up" on a man. I am 16, I don't know how valued my opinion on this matter will be, but here. I think most people don't exercise their right to concealed carry nearly enough. Most people have the, "It won't happen to me" bug. That attitude will be fine until this type of situation occurs. Personally, the day I turn 21 will be the day I apply for my CWP, in which case I would do anything in my power to try and end the situation. 0 -
for the past 12 months slc has goten very dangers, it seems that every othere day theres a shoot out in wvc (west valley city), thats why i got my ccw but i hope and pray that i would not have to use it. I don't travel to wvc or slc often... but if i do... I will have my gun.... 0 -

I get real tired of gun owners that are suposedly for our 2nd amendment rights incorectly useing the term "asault Rifle" and only giveing the anti gunners more fuel for their fight by useing the term.
Mr. Frank, A semi-auto AR or AK type gun that is owned by a civillian is not an "Assault Rifle"! Only the military has such weapons by the actual term. I correct you on this as I would not put it past the "ANTI" crowd to moniter our forums to gain fuel for their fight. You're correct that it is an overused term designed to elicit an emotional backlash from the folks, out there who don't know the difference. The big problem is lack of education of the general public.
Until a little over a year ago, I was part of that 'uneducated' public. Not anti-gun, but tired of reading the news reports about these kinds of events and the anti-gun rhetoric. After visiting a gun show and talking with a great number of vendors and some customers, I decided to get more education. I bought my first gun (an M44), went to the range and found out what fun it is, even though the M44 probably wasn't the best 'first' gun choice. I now have a few more guns, a C&R license and I will have my conceal carry permit by the end of the month. My friends think I'm nuts. I invite them to the range. One more convert, so far.
Point is, they fear what they don't know. The question is, How to enlighten the general public to understand the need for guns in the general population and the security that the U.S. enjoys as a result.
A nutjob like this one, if determined, will find some medium to carry out an act of terror. In this case, how much worse would it have been, were it not for the off duty cop? How much worse would it have been had he decided to use a bomb, instead or drive his vehicle thru the doors and run people over?0 -

Oh good. I was watching The Today Show and the pump shotgun has suddenly changed into a rifle, and shotgun pellets are now bullets.

The last time I checked, the M16 series was classified as "service rifles" by the military. I haven't any documentation for the M-4 series, so I can't speak on that subject.
The term "Assault Rifle" is like the term "Sports Car". No one agrees on the meaning and it is subject to interpretation.
As for me, I'll countinue to use the term. I'm tired of walking on eggshells so I don't offend, frighten, or piss people off.0 -

There is simply no logic that is going to work, period. If you look on the Brady Campaign website they proclaim that the M-16 series was specifically designed to "spray fire from the hip". This is who we are debating. "Assault Rifle" as a term is too deeply ingrained in the media to stop it now.
If you need further proof, look no further than the .50 cal rifle debate. I have never seen it's supporters refer to it as anything other than .50 cal, .50 BMG, ect.....If you watch the debate in the media, it is called an anti-tank rifle, or a long-range "sniper" rifle. I keep hearing about its abilities to bring down airliners, ect.
We're losing because we're letting the "sporting use" debate dictate the terms we feel comfortable using.0 -

The malls around here say "No Guns allowed". Difficult to comply and carry concealed. I believe cocealed carry should be allowed everywhere. I am a minority believer I guess. 0 -
In most states the punishment for carrying into a a lot of private owned non ccw establishments is only a 4th deg mis. Not much of a charge to worry about (if you feel the need). Grocery stores, Malls, 7-11 etc. I`m not talking about govt owned buildings or bars. By no means is this meant to be legal advice, I am not an attorney. Thank God. 0
