Just found an old US mess knife above my door!

I am in the process of replacing the doors in the basement with new pre-hung ones, and when ripped out an existing one, there was an old mess knife in the space between the old door frame and the ?lintel? (I don't know the terms, but that's close enough). It's in MINT condition. I'm going to hang onto it, but I think it was there for good luck or something...

My house was built in 1952 and the whole neighborhood used to be military officer's housing way back when.

Here's a link to an auction that has some pictures of a knife just like the one I found. My digital camera is busted at the moment, so I can't post a pic of the actual one that I just found.
