Shooter says he mistook cow for coyote

A man says he shot and killed a neighbor's cow after mistaking it for a coyote.

Authorities and the owner are skeptical.

The undersheriff in northern Michigan's Benzie County says he doesn't see how anyone could confuse a 1,400-pound, pregnant cow with a coyote, which typically weighs 20 to 45 pounds.

And anyway, shooting coyotes is illegal during deer-shooting season. Authorities asked the county prosecutor to bring charges.

The 42-year-old man told authorities he was out to shoot coyotes near his home Saturday when he killed the cow, Undersheriff Rory Heckman said. Heckman said the man then tried to drag the cow home.

"The part of his story he his holding to is he shot at a coyote. I don't know how he hit a several-thousand-pound cow mistaking it for a coyote," Heckman said.

The cow, named Hannah, had wandered away from her farm.

"My husband thought that he should go through some therapy looking at repeated pictures of cows and coyotes, because they look nothing alike," said owner DeAnn Mosher. "It didn't make any sense to me."

    I believe him....60 percent of American politicians look at the 2nd Amendment and see something totally different than what I see... I figure he is simply a freaking Democrat that's all!!!

    Now lets just wait a minute here. Its not the shooters fault. Lets break this down a bit further:

    1. The cow did not have "COW" lettered on both sides in order to aid the unfamiliar hunter to quickly identify the species. Most likely in direct violation of Michigan law.

    2. The cow wandered off said owners property. This was down most likely with forethought and malice in which to taunt the said hunter.

    3. The owner of said cow most likely failed to post signs to educate the hunter of the visual differences between cows and coyotes.

    4. Investigation needs to determine if the cow was mimicking a coyote call in an attempt to entrap the hunter.

    I think there's several Donkies and Goats shot around here during Deer season. We have a lot of city people come here to the Ntl forest to hunt, and think it's time for a two week binge.[:(!]

    i remember my grandmother loosing a cow by a hunter who thought it was a deer, i know it happens but i think it proves several of my past post on how ignorant and irresponsible some gun owners can be ruining it for the rest of us, i myself don't think it is a mistake anyone with a lick of sense could do because how can you make a clean kill on something you cannot identify

    Ah come on the SOB would have had to have ridden the shortest short bus not to know the difference between a cow and a coyote...
