bug out pack
what's the best "bug out" pack? What does everyone use? Right now, we use some surplus Swiss packs we got for cheap (4/$30 or so that we got from sportsmansguide.) They work pretty well, are solidly made, and haul a good amount of gear and the nice thing was that we got 4 of them in two pairs of two different sizes (two larger for me, and the smaller ones fit The Wife.) But I'm thinking of upgrading to something more modern, maybe like a MOLLE rig or similar. Something like the Level III assault pack. Something more adjustable and more "versatile." suggestions?

I ain't buggin nowhere. I'll send my wife and daughter up to the in-laws out in the country (more country than us). The way I look at it, if it ever gets bad enough for me to have to "bug out", I'ma stayin and fighting. Whoever it is that I might be "buggin from" will have one heck of a welcoming party.[}:)][}:)] 0 -

I hear what you're saying and believe me, we've got most bases covered. I'm concerned with compartments. The ones we have now have just one large main compartment, no dividers and only one or two exterior pockets. There's plenty of space, but no way to organize the contents in a manner that makes sense. Food is piled on top of clothes next to the first aid kit underneath water bottles next to more food and catty-corner from a flashlight. "Contents may shift during flight." the last thing I want in a true S H ! T-storm is to be fumbling through 40 or 50 pounds of unorganized gear looking for what I need right then, when that problem could be solved if the pack had dividers and I had ordered it into some type of system.0 -
You shouldn't be carrying 45lbs of crap piled on top of more crap; most times defensive items and a water source, some kind of optics and some commo should do it (unless you're waaaay out in the backcountry to begin with...). 0 -
Well, have you thought about load bearing gear that allows you to drop the socks and tootsie rolls, and hang on to the immdediate needs- ammo, wepaons, medical, water? And for the big pack, a couple of hacksaw blades with one end wrapped in duct tape only weighs about 3 ounces, costs a buck. Just in case I REALLY need to open that gate. 0 -

The only bug out I really worry about is a WMD attack here in the D.C. area. In that case, I would take enough food, water, a gun for each of us and extra ammo to get back to my family in PA. They have tons of stuff set up just in case, at my encouragement.0 -
I have much of my stuff double wrapped in heavy zip-lock bags - the ones that have the little zipper handles. This helps with keeping things separated, but not organized.
Found a bunch of 4 ounce water packages at the surplus store and bought all of them for $0.20 a piece - added to the pack - they are pretty heavy, though.

The only bug out I really worry about is a WMD attack here in the D.C. area. In that case, I would take enough food, water, a gun for each of us and extra ammo to get back to my family in PA. They have tons of stuff set up just in case, at my encouragement.
And how the heck are you going to get up 270 or 15 if there's an attack on DC? If a dirty or some other kind of bomb is blown up in DC it will be a week to a month before the roads are cleared enough for anyone to be able to drive. Furthermore, the national guard will probably shut down all the roads to keep people in place to limit the chance of an epidemic spreading.
If something bad happens and you're not on the road no more than 5 mins after it happens, you're not going anywhere.0 -

My "Bug out pack" is much too big to carry.
Therefore,I'll stay put right here in the country where I can see'em comin' from any direction.
Got plenty of food in the freezers,plenty of water in the well and plenty of guns and ammo in the safes.
Hell,I'll just call up whoever wants to join me,fire up the pit and we'll have us a "Bug Out Party".
