Question for the "Geek Squad" members....

Queen of Swords
Gonna see how this "damsel in distress" stuff works out....

My computer speakers won't play anything from the computer, but when my daughter plugs her iPod into it, they play.
I've tried to get into the system to trouble-shoot, but nothing is coming up wrong, and frankly, I'm not computer saavy enough to come up with another suggestion. I'm not even sure what I am looking for, what I'm doing, and I don't care who knows it, I just want my sound back.

Could she have dowloaded some sort of virus from a music site? Anyone have a similar problem? Care to walk me through how to fix it?

    Down on the bottom right, there are a bunch of icons,
    click the speaker one, if any boxes are checked, uncheck them, and i have all my levels all the way turned up.

    If their at the bottom, or checked, it wont play.

    thats probably whats wrong. If she BUYS music, its safe. If she downloads it from Limewire, she had better know what shes doing, and be careful, their cracking down, busting people, and sending them fines.

    Don't worry, it's not a virus.
    First things first...
    Make sure the volume is up on the speakers... I don't know which version of Windows you are running, but in the lower right hand corner of the screen near where the time is, you should see a speaker. Double click on the speaker, and the sound options will come up. Make sure none are muted, and make sure that they are turned up to a decent level. It's possible that one of the settings is turned off/muted/too low, but the line in is still turned on... which is why they work when the Ipod is in but not other than that. Try that first...

    I have no "speaker icon" in the lower right hand corner....

    Go into control panel, and look under sound devices which should show a speaker icon.
    Check settings there, and that is also where you check the box to show the icon.

    Tried that , Marc. It shos my volume is on "low", but it is not alloing me to access anu bottons to adjust the volume....

    Tells me "no audio device"....which would seem to me indicate that the computer is not even recognizing that my speaker are plugged in (which they are, before anyone suggest I make sure they are plugged in).....[:D]

    Drag the volume slider with your mouse.
    Also check the box for the tray icon, and be sure the mute box is not checked.

    you won't have that icon unless it is check marked to be there, as mark suggested control panel/sound make sure all inputs and out puts are turned on if not,itunes have probably taken over as your default player, try this, open the music you want to play, right click on it, choose the device you want to play it with, try that if it doesn't work post it, and knowing your os and computer itself will help

    FYI - my wifey's computer genius says that free music sights are jammed with viruses - also MySpace.

    Did you try re-booting the computer with her widget not hooked up, or going to the "System Restore" feature??

    It should be easy to fix.

    Are you using Windows XL ??

    oops just saw your last post you will have to reinstall your sound player, cpanel/system/device manager, you should see your sound in yellow

    if not i can email you my number and i can walk you through it

    Yes, I am using Windows XL. I tried the "Systems Restore" function, virus scanning, restarting without the dohicky, just about anything I could think of

    You need to remove the sound card drivers, and .inf files by deleting the card through device manager.
    When you reboot Windows will detect the sound card, and reinstall.
    It is Windows XP BTW![:D]

    A place you can talk to your friends, or if your stupid, as i said, and add people you dont know, it can be a WHOLE new world of hurt.
    Perverts, viruses, ect.
    Mine is set to private, unless I add you, you know my email, or last name, you cant access my page, OR message me, and even then if you have that info, I have to accept you to be able to view it.

    you can get it from my space just by viewing a page that has one, even a picture, they can replace one pixel in a picture with a entire virus, as soon as you view it the virus is loaded into your temporary Internet files

    btw its not just myspace

    I, have 2, then a virus scanner running 24/7...

    don't be so koky young one[:)], a virus scanner is only as good as its updates, a virus can hit today, your program may not catch it until it is added to the data base, in the mean time it wreaks havoc

    I meant to make sure they are turned up via the icon vs the little wheel or whatever is on the actual speakers. [:D]

    Anyway, let's try this...

    Click on Start
    Click on Control Pannel
    Click on Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices (or the closest thing)
    From here you should be able to see several options for your sound/speaker settings. The solution to the problem lies somewhere in here. Hopefully, your version of Windows will be able to locate and re-install the sound driver for your speakers if need be.
